Team Fortress 2 names are Steam display names, so there is no character limit to speak of, but the community has a clear house style. TF2 has also generated more in-jokes than almost any shooter: Pootis, Sandvich, spycrabs, Gibus-wearing free-to-play players, conga lines, random crits, unusual hats and the whole trading economy of refined metal and keys. Names drawn from those memes read as instantly native to the game, which is why so many veterans use them. For Mann vs. Machine squads and competitive teams, shorter role-based names (RollerHeavy, FlankScout, UberDrop) are more common than jokes.

Pick a name that matches how you actually play: a Trolldier or Demoknight tag invites a certain reputation, while a Medic name with "heal" in it tends to attract pocket buddies.
