Chinese Temple Name Generator
Buddhist temples, Daoist abbeys and mountain monasteries
A list of 1,000 Chinese temple and monastery names in pinyin and English, from Guangji Si and Qingxu Guan (Pure Void Abbey) to Cold Mountain Monastery and Temple of the City God. Made for wuxia and xianxia fiction, games and maps.
About Chinese temple names
A Chinese religious building carries its type in its last word. Si is a Buddhist temple or monastery. Guan (abbey) and Gong (palace) are Daoist, and Gong is also borne by temples of popular deities such as Mazu's Tianhou Gong. An is a nunnery or a small hermitage. Miao and Ci are temples and shrines to deities, sages and ancestors, such as the city god's Chenghuang Miao or a clan's ancestral hall. Ta is a pagoda. In front of the ending usually stand two characters from a shared stock of auspicious words: cloud, dragon, spring, compassion, light, peace.
Because that stock is shared, two-character temple names recur all over China, and many entries here are borne by one or several real temples. The names follow real patterns, and thirty of the best known are labelled "real" with their location. In English the ending is translated once and never doubled: Ciyun Si is Compassion Cloud Temple, not "Ciyun Si Temple".
The list mixes plain pinyin, pinyin with an English gloss and full English renderings. It runs through Buddhist temples, Daoist abbeys and palaces, nunneries and hermitages, temples to gods and clan shrines, mountain monasteries and cliff temples, pagodas and grottoes, martial monasteries for wuxia, and ruined temples for ghost stories.
How to choose Chinese temple names
- Choose the ending by religion first: Si for Buddhist monks, Guan or Gong for Daoist priests, An for nuns or a lone hermit, Miao or Ci for a god, a sage or an ancestor.
- Use the pinyin form where characters speak the name and the English form in narration or on a map legend, but never join the two into something like "Longquan Si Temple".
- Put a mountain or town in front when your world has several temples of one name, the way real ones are told apart: a Guangji Si on West Mountain and another inside the city walls.
- Entries labelled "real" are existing places of worship. Keep them for stories set in that location, and remember that an unlabelled name may still match a real temple somewhere.
- Buddhism, Daoism and Chinese folk religion are living faiths, so treat even a ruined or haunted temple with the respect you would give a real one.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Si, Guan, Gong, An, Miao, Ci and Ta?
Si is a Buddhist temple or monastery, while Guan and Gong are Daoist and are usually rendered as abbey and palace. An is a nunnery or hermitage, Miao and Ci are temples and shrines to deities, sages and ancestors, and Ta is a pagoda. Yuan is a cloister, Dong a cave and Yan a crag temple. In the list, Puji Si, Chongxu Guan, Shuiyue An (Water Moon Nunnery) and Chenghuang Miao (City God Temple) show the main types.
Are these real Chinese temple names?
They follow real naming patterns, and because two-character temple names recur across China, many of them belong to real temples somewhere. Thirty well-known ones carry a label, for example Shaolin Si (real, Henan) and Baiyun Guan (real, Beijing). Treat the rest as typical names, not as names nobody has used.
Which names suit a wuxia or xianxia story?
For martial monks look at entries such as Iron Staff Monastery, Jingang Si (Vajra Temple) and Tiger Subduing Temple. Daoist cultivators fit names like Qingxu Guan (Pure Void Abbey) or Palace of the Purple Empyrean. Every entry names a building, so pair it with a sect or school name if your story needs one.
Does the list cover monasteries and nunneries as well as temples?
Yes. Chinese uses Si for both a temple and a monastery, so most Si names work for either, and the list adds English forms such as Cold Mountain Monastery and Cloud Gate Monastery. Nunneries and hermitages end in An, and small retreats appear as cloisters and viharas, for example Zhulin Jingshe (Bamboo Grove Vihara).
