About tarot names

Tarot names come in a few distinct flavors, and the right one depends on what you are naming. A reader persona usually pairs a soft, old-fashioned given name with a surname that carries a little shadow or nature in it (Seraphina Vale, Isolde Marrow); the tradition runs from the Victorian parlor to the carnival tent, which is why Madame, Sister and Mystic still work as titles. Occultists of the early tarot revival used Latin pseudonyms like Etteilla (Alliette backwards) and Papus, so a reader who wants gravitas can follow them.

Card names follow the Major Arcana convention: a definite article plus a single archetype, The Lantern Keeper, The Threshold, The Hanged Fox. Good original Arcana name an image that can be drawn, not an abstract virtue, and they sound like they belong between The Hermit and The Tower. Minor Arcana names are rank plus suit, so renaming the suits (Lanterns, Thorns, Keys, Tides instead of Wands, Swords, Pentacles, Cups) is the fastest way to make a custom deck feel new.

Deck and business names lean on the same imagery, moths, salt, candles, keys, moons, but keep the word Tarot, Oracle or Readings visible so clients understand what they are looking at. Italian and French tarocchi vocabulary (Bateleur, Ruota, Trionfi) is mixed in for characters who live inside the cards.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match the name to the job: two-word persona names for readers (Isolde Marrow), 'The ...' titles for Major Arcana, rank-plus-suit for Minor Arcana, and a name with Tarot or Readings in it for a deck or business.
  • For a reader persona, say it aloud as a client would: 'a reading with Seraphina Vale' should sound calm and unforced. Skip anything you would be embarrassed to print on a business card.
  • Original Arcana should name an image, not an adjective. The Drowned Bell and The Lamplighter can be illustrated; 'The Sadness' cannot, and it will never feel like a real card.
  • If you rename the four suits for a custom deck, keep them elemental and concrete (Lanterns for fire, Tides for water, Roots for earth, Feathers for air) so readers can still map them to Wands, Cups, Pentacles and Swords.
  • Before adopting a reader or shop name, search social media and domain registrars; the tarot community is crowded and a half-dozen 'Moon & Moth' pages already exist for most pretty combinations.

Frequently asked questions

What kinds of tarot names does this generator make?

Four kinds: reader and mystic persona names (with and without titles like Madame or Sister), original Major and Minor Arcana card titles, names for custom tarot, oracle and Lenormand decks, and business or page names for reading services. It also includes character names built from tarot words such as Temperance, Fortuna, Bateleur and Ruota.

Can I use one of these as my professional tarot reader name?

Yes, all names are free to use. Pick one you can say comfortably, check that no established reader already uses it, and consider how it looks on a booking page or card back before committing.

How do I name a new Major Arcana card?

Follow the convention of a definite article and a single archetype that can be illustrated: The Ferryman, The Hollow Crown, The Wolf Mother. The best additions fill a gap in the 22 existing cards (thresholds, craft, memory, exile) rather than duplicating The Tower or The Star under a new name.

Why do some names use Italian or French words?

Tarot began as the Italian game tarocchi, and the French Tarot de Marseille fixed the card names used in most modern decks. Words like Bateleur, Le Mat, Ruota, Trionfi and Minchiate are authentic tarot vocabulary, which makes them natural surnames or given names for characters in a tarot-themed story.
