About card game names

Card game names do a lot of work in very few words. On a crowded shelf or a Kickstarter grid, the title has to signal genre, tone and player count almost instantly. Look at the games that broke out over the last decade and a pattern appears: short, concrete, sayable. Dominion, Codenames, Splendor, Wingspan, Exploding Kittens, Sushi Go, Cards Against Humanity, Coup, Love Letter, Hanabi. Almost all are one to three words, and almost all use a real, vivid noun rather than an abstract fantasy compound.

The structure tends to follow the genre. Strategy games and deck-builders favor a single strong word or a proper noun (Dominion, Ascension, Sovereign). Trading card games and duel games use grand two-part names with a subtitle (Magic: The Gathering, Flesh and Blood, Sorcery: Contested Realm). Party games love a joke or a familiar phrase turned sideways (Exploding Kittens, Poetry for Neanderthals, Wavelength). Cozy family games reach for gentle, natural imagery (Wingspan, Cascadia, Parks). Pairing two nouns with an ampersand (Salt & Sable, Fern & Fable) is a fast way to get a premium, tactile feel.

Before committing, search BoardGameGeek and the USPTO trademark database, and check that the domain or social handle is available. A great title with a live trademark conflict is a title you'll have to change after the art is done.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Read the name aloud at a table. If it's hard to say quickly ("Wanna play Ember & Ash?"), players won't recommend it by name, and word of mouth is how card games sell.
  • Match the word count to the genre: one word for strategy games, a joke or phrase for party games, a Name: Subtitle format for trading card games and expansions.
  • Search BoardGameGeek and the USPTO trademark database before you print anything. Card game titles are heavily trademarked, and near-collisions (Ember, Embers, Ember Wars) still cause problems.
  • Avoid generic combos like Battle Cards or Kingdom Quest. They sound like placeholders and are almost impossible to find on Google.
  • Leave room for expansions. Names like Coven or Riftbound extend naturally (Coven: Blood Moon, Riftbound: Ashen Court); a very specific title like Bees Bees Bees does not.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good card game name?

Short, concrete and easy to say. The most successful modern card games use one to three words built around a vivid noun (Wingspan, Codenames, Splendor) or a memorable joke for party games (Exploding Kittens). Avoid abstract fantasy filler like Realm of Power.

Can I trademark a card game name?

Yes, and you should before launching a Kickstarter. In the US, search the USPTO's TESS database and BoardGameGeek for conflicts, then file in the class covering games (Class 28). Very common words are harder to protect than distinctive coinages.

Are these names free to use for my game?

The names generated here are free to use, but we don't check trademarks. Some may already belong to published games, so run a search before you commit money to art, printing or a domain.

How should I name a trading card game versus a party card game?

TCGs typically use a grand primary name plus a subtitle that can change with each set (Sorcery: Contested Realm, Arcanum: The Gathering Storm). Party games work best with a funny, conversational phrase people can shout across a room (Say the Thing, Not It, Terrible Ideas).
