Tainted Grail Name Generator

Tainted Grail takes the Arthurian legend and lets it rot. In Awaken Realms' board game and the Conquest and Fall of Avalon video games, King Arthur led his people out of a dying Britain to Avalon generations ago, the Menhirs that hold back the Wyrdness are guttering out, and the heroes are not knights but villagers from Cuanacht: Beor, Ailei, Arev and Maggot. The naming follows that split. Old names from Welsh and Irish legend (Gwythyr, Peredur, Medrawd, Fiach, Niamh) sit alongside blunt Anglo-Saxon ones (Beor, Godric, Hild) and nicknames that sound like insults (Maggot, Scab, Mudge), because Avalon is a place where a child is named for whatever its mother could see from the hovel door.

The generator mixes several registers so you can pick the right one for the character. Pure given names from Brythonic, Gaelic, Cornish and Breton sources suit ordinary Avalonians; patronymics (ap, ferch, mac, ni) suit families with some standing; Sir and Dame names with bleak epithets suit the decayed knights of Kamelot; hermits, monks and the hooded figures of the Wyrdness get titles instead of names; and the Fore-Dwellers and their kin draw on Fomorian and Mabinogion names like Balor, Tethra and Arawn. A byname such as Menhir-Keeper, Red-Death's Orphan or Wyrd-Marked ties a character to the setting in a single word.
