Nahuatl Name Generator

Nahuatl is the language of the Mexica (Aztecs) and is still spoken by more than a million people across central Mexico today. Nahuatl names are almost always transparent words with clear meanings: Citlali means star, Xochitl means flower, Tonatiuh is the sun, Coatl is serpent, and Cuauhtli is eagle. Because the vocabulary is built from stackable roots, longer names read like small phrases: Cuauhtemoc combines cuauhtli (eagle) with temo (to descend), giving 'descending eagle', while Nezahualcoyotl means 'fasting coyote'.

Historical Aztec names also carry grammatical markers worth knowing. The suffix -tzin is an honorific (Malintzin, Cacamatzin, Nopaltzin), -tl or -tli is the standard noun ending, and calendar-day names such as Ce Acatl (One Reed) or Nahui Ollin (Four Movement) were common because children were often named for their birth day in the 260-day tonalpohualli. Names of gods like Tezcatlipoca or Huitzilopochtli were generally not given to ordinary people, so treat those as deity or title names rather than everyday first names.

Today many Nahuatl names are popular in Mexico as regular given names, especially Citlali, Itzel, Yaretzi, Xochitl, Ixchel and Tonatiuh, and Spanish-influenced spellings without the final -tl are common.
