Generate character names in the styles of the Symbaroum tabletop RPG: Ambrians like Adelmo Belarro and Tatiana Longmarch, barbarians like Varagan of Karohar, elves like Míara-Míen, goblins like Hubb Turnipthief, and ogres with blunt names like Doorpost.

About Symbaroum names

Symbaroum, the Swedish dark-fantasy tabletop RPG, sets a young kingdom against an ancient forest, and each people in it sounds different. Ambrians, the subjects of Queen Korinthia, carry names with a Latin, Greek and Slavic ring: Lasifor, Lysindra, Seldonio, Iakobo. Nobles add a house name, and a few famous figures are known by an English compound byname instead, as in Korinthia Nightbane and Lasifor Nightpitch.

The barbarians of Davokar use heavier names such as Tharaban and Yeleta and are placed by clan, so most barbarian names here come with a clan attached: Varagan of Karohar, Aldeya of Baiaga. Elf names run on accented vowels and paired, hyphenated forms in the manner of Teara-Téana. Goblins get short, earthy names, sometimes with a comic byname like that of Garm Wormwriggler. Ogres walk out of the forest with no past and are named by whoever takes them in, which gives blunt names like Doorpost and Little Brother.

Every name in the list is an original in one of these styles, and the houses attached to the Ambrian names are invented too. About a third of the list is Ambrian and a quarter barbarian. The troll names are the smallest group and the loosest fit, a guess at a harsher sound. None of it is official material.

How to choose Symbaroum names

  • Settle an Ambrian's station before the name. A commoner can go by a single name like Benvolo or Kamilla, a noble needs a house as in Demetria Istrana, and a byname like Longmarch or Lawbinder should point at something the character did.
  • For a barbarian, keep the given name and change the clan to suit the character's home. Belotar of Vajvod and Belotar of Zarek are two very different people at the gaming table.
  • Copy the accents when you write an elf name down. Nuáro-Ri and Séna-Séara lose their sound without them, and the paired forms help a long-lived character feel old.
  • Let a goblin's byname tell a small story. Hubb Turnipthief and Nokk Doorknocker give the game master a rumor to use before the character has said a word.
  • Decide who named your ogre. A farmer would call a foundling Ploughboy or Haystack, a gate guard would pick Gatepost, and the choice says as much about the namer as about the ogre.

Frequently asked questions

What do Ambrian names sound like?

They lean on Latin, Greek and Slavic sounds, with many men's names ending in -o and women's in -a, and K and I where other settings would write C and J. The list follows that with names like Kleonio Vestrio, Iolanta Ulvaro and Miroslava Ashmantle. Single names such as Emeriko and Pulkeria work for commoners.

Are these names taken from the Symbaroum books?

No. The characters, the Ambrian houses and the bynames in the list are all original, written to fit the styles of the setting. The only borrowed words are the clan names attached to the barbarians, such as Karohar, Baiaga and Vajvod, which you can swap freely. Nothing here is official.

How should I name a barbarian from Davokar?

Pick a given name with some weight to it, then say which clan the character belongs to, as in Haldovar of Zarek or Doryela of Yedesa. If the clan is not settled yet, the list also has bare names like Feldaran and Svateya. Women's names here often end in -eya or -eta and men's in -an, -ar or -on.

Why do the ogres have such plain names?

In the setting ogres arrive without memories and receive a name from the people who adopt them. That is why the ogre names here are things a farmhand or a soldier might say, such as Lump, Bucket, Old Reliable and Found-in-Rain. Use them as they are or as a nickname beside a grander name.
