Mork Borg Name Generator
Harsh, doomed names for a dying world
Generate names for doomed characters in the style of the Mörk Borg tabletop RPG: harsh one-word names like Skorg, Hrelm and Vattna, wretched bynames such as Hrelm the Unshriven and Old Skorg of the Ditch, plus places, cults, relics, taverns and omens. An independent fan page, not affiliated with the game's publishers.
About mork Borg names
Mörk Borg is a Swedish doom-metal tabletop RPG about wretched people in a world that is about to end, and its characters die often enough that a table gets through names quickly. The house sound is short, harsh and ugly on purpose: one or two syllables, hard consonants, a Nordic shape and the odd decorative umlaut. The rulebook's own name table sets the model with names such as Karg, Urvarg and Klort. The 1,000 names here are new names made in the same manner, such as Skorg, Hrelm, Vattna and Tölk, not copied from that table.
More than half of the entries name a character. Some are bare one-word names. Others carry a byname that says how badly life has gone, such as Hrelm the Unshriven or Old Skorg of the Ditch, and many are flavored for deserters, gutter thieves, hermits, heretic priests, ruined nobles and herb brewers. The rest is the world around them: Swedish-built place names like Skälvik and Dödmark beside English ones like the Weeping Fen, then cults, relics, scroll titles, bandit gangs, taverns and omens of the end.
This is an independent fan page for use with the game, not affiliated with or endorsed by its publishers. Nothing here is official, and canon places and figures such as Galgenbeck are left out on purpose.
How to choose mork Borg names
- Keep a bare name to one or two syllables and end it on a consonant cluster: Skorg, Vulm, Kreft. If it is pleasant to say, it is probably too pretty for this game.
- Let the byname record a failure, a debt or a narrow escape instead of a deed: the Unshriven, the Half-Hanged, Who Sold His Shadow.
- Roll three or four names before the session starts and keep them beside your character sheet. When a character dies, the next one is already named and play does not stop.
- Use the place, cult and tavern entries as prompts: the Weeping Fen, the Tithe-Eaters and the Tankard and Noose each suggest a scene on their own.
- The Swedish place names are built from real parts, so you can make more: död is death, korp is raven, vik is bay, myr is bog and by is village.
Frequently asked questions
Are these names from the Mörk Borg rulebook?
No. The rulebook has its own name table, and this list was not copied from it: these are new names in the same short, harsh manner, such as Gnast, Kreft and Morvild, with canon places and figures left out on purpose. A short name can still match one in the book by chance, so use the rulebook for anything official. This is a fan page and is not affiliated with the game's publishers.
What do the Swedish place names mean?
They are compounds of ordinary Swedish words. Dödmark is roughly dead land, Korpnäs is raven headland, Svartkärr is black fen and Galgbacken is gallows hill. Names in English, such as the Weeping Fen and Carrion Ford, sit beside them for tables that prefer to skip the umlauts.
How do I name a character for a particular class?
Look for the bynames that fit the trade. Krel, Deserter of Three Armies suits a runaway soldier, Rat-Finger Mikkel a gutter thief, Uthar of the Hollow Oak a hermit, Deacon Rot a heretic priest, Count Gaurn Lackland a ruined noble and Henbane Marte a brewer of herbs. Any bare name works for any class.
What are the omens and scroll titles for?
They are prompts for the game master. An omen such as The Moon Forgets to Rise can announce the next step toward the end of the world, and a title such as Smoke Unwrites the Name can label a scroll whose effect you decide yourself. They were made for this list and are not quotations from the rulebook's prophecies or scrolls.
