Numenera is set a billion years in the future, on an Earth where eight great civilizations have risen and vanished, so Ninth World names do not belong to any one culture. The published material deliberately mixes the familiar with the strange: Tybalt Ahl, Whenith Sarromere, Calaval, Durkhal, King Laird of Ghan, Queen Armalu of Navarene. Some could pass on a modern street, others sound dredged out of a datasphere, and a name halfway between the two is usually the most convincing.

A few habits help. Many Ninth World people carry a short, slightly worn first name (Dori, Kaen, Oran, Nin) with a surname that is either blunt and consonant-heavy (Vosk, Dray, Tull) or long and liquid (Sarromere, Nebalich, Orrendale). Others go by a single name, or by their home: "Osca of Charmonde" tells a table where she is from and that she travels. Titles such as Aeon Priest or Amber Pope are roles rather than names and are best kept for NPCs.

This list mixes all of those styles, with nods to Steadfast places like Qi, Shallamas, Uxphon and Ledon. Pick a name that matches your descriptor and focus: a Clever Jack who Explores Dark Places can carry something wry and short, while a Mystical Nano who Commands Mental Powers can afford a name with more syllables.
