500 surnames typical of Bavaria, one per entry: farm names like Obermeier, Hinterhuber and Schmidbauer, origin names like Straubinger and Thalhammer, -l forms like Brandl and Seidl, and Franconian and Swabian names such as Nüsslein and Häfele.

About Bavarian last names

Bavarian surnames grew out of farms, villages and dialect. A Meier ran the main farm of a manor and a Huber held a full farmstead, and Bavaria added a word to say which one: Obermeier and Niedermeier were the upper and lower farm, Hinterhuber the one at the back, Schmidbauer the farmer who was also the smith. Spelling varies by family, so Maier, Mayer, Meier, Mayr and Mair are five separate surnames.

Other names say where someone came from. The ending -inger marks a person from a place in -ing, as in Straubinger and Freisinger, and -hammer points to a place in -ham or -heim, as in Thalhammer. The diminutive -l is everywhere in Old Bavaria, which means Upper Bavaria, Lower Bavaria and the Upper Palatinate: Brandl, Seidl, Hartl, Meindl, Riedl. Names in -beck such as Haslbeck and Irlbeck belong mostly to Lower Bavaria and the Upper Palatinate. Franconia prefers -lein and -el (Nüsslein, Wölfel), and Bavarian Swabia and the Allgäu prefer -le (Häfele, Eberle).

There is no separate stock of Bavarian given names: people in Bavaria carry ordinary German first names, so the surname is what places a name there. Müller, Schmidt, Schneider, Fischer, Weber and Wagner lead in Bavaria as they do all over Germany, and each is listed once.

How to choose Bavarian last names

  • Match the name to the region. Obermeier, Brandl and Haslbeck suit Old Bavaria, Nüsslein, Popp and Hümmer suit Franconia, and Häfele, Kienle and Wiedemann suit Bavarian Swabia and the Allgäu.
  • Keep the umlauts and the ß, as in Kneißl, Graßl, Pöllath and Füracker. Where they cannot be typed, the accepted fallback is ae, oe, ue and ss.
  • Treat spelling variants as different families. A character is a Sedlmeier, a Sedlmaier or a Sedlmayr, and the spelling stays the same on every page.
  • Use the farm words to build a village. Ober-, Nieder-, Mitter- and Hinter- say where a farm lay, so an Obermeier and a Niedermeier, or an Oberhuber and a Hinterhuber, can be neighbors in one valley.
  • Some names are known far beyond Bavaria through sport, politics and the church, such as Beckenbauer, Schweinsteiger, Stoiber and Ratzinger. Readers will hear the echo, so use them only when you want it.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common Bavarian last names?

Müller, Huber, Bauer, Schmid, Maier, Wagner and Fischer are among the most frequent, with Mayer, Meier, Wimmer and Lechner close behind in Old Bavaria. Huber and the southern spellings Maier, Mayer and Mayr stand far higher than they do in northern Germany, where the usual spelling is Meyer. The page gives no figures, because counts differ from source to source.

What is the difference between Maier, Mayer, Meier, Mayr and Mair?

All five come from the same word for the steward or tenant of a manor's main farm, and they sound the same. The spelling was fixed family by family when record keeping became regular, so each is a surname of its own. Mayr and Mair are at home in the far south and in Austria, and all five are in the list.

How are Bavarian surnames different from Austrian ones?

They overlap, because both grew from the same Bavarian dialect: Huber, Gruber and Reiter are at home on both sides of the border. Bavaria more often writes -meier and -maier where Austria prefers -mayr, and it has whole groups that Austria lacks, such as the Franconian -lein names and the Swabian -le names. Austria in turn has the Czech, Hungarian and Slovene surnames of the old empire.

What do -inger, -hammer and -l mean in a Bavarian name?

An -inger name points to a place whose name ends in -ing, so a Straubinger's forebears came from Straubing. A -hammer name points to a place in -ham or -heim, as in Thalhammer and Mooshammer. The -l is a diminutive: Brandl, Hartl and Seidl began as pet forms of old given names.
