Stygian Name Generator

Stygian means 'of the Styx', the river of hatred that the gods swore their unbreakable oaths upon and that Charon ferried the dead across. The word has come to describe anything as dark and gloomy as the underworld itself, so Stygian names cover the whole Greek and Roman house of the dead: the five rivers (Styx, Acheron, Phlegethon, Cocytus, Lethe), the primordial night Nyx and her brood (Thanatos, Hypnos, Moros, the Keres, Nemesis), the judges Minos, Rhadamanthys, and Aeacus, the Furies Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone, and Hades and Persephone themselves. Roman and Etruscan tradition adds Orcus, Dis Pater, Libitina, Charun, and Vanth.

The Greek names carry a recognizable sound: hard consonants, -os and -eus endings for males, -a and -e for females, and roots for darkness and death (skotos, zophos, erebos, melas, thanatos, chthon). Latin names for the same ideas (nox, umbra, tenebrae, caligo, mors, letum) sound softer and work well as surnames or titles for gothic and grimdark characters. Both sets are used here, along with names formed on those roots (Skotia, Nyktalos, Umbrosa) so you have more than the canon list.

These suit necromancers, death priests, underworld gods, and dark elves, or the boat, sword, or fortress a villain names after the river of oaths.
