Name your high school or college student section with ideas like The Bark Side, Decibel Nation and Hoarse by Halftime. The list covers mascot wordplay, color crews, bleacher jokes and theme night names.

About student section names

A student section name turns a block of bleachers into a team of its own. The best known examples are short and easy to chant: Duke's Cameron Crazies are named for their arena, Michigan State's Izzone for a coach, and countless high schools simply fill The Zoo, The Jungle or The Pit every Friday night. A good name fits on a T-shirt, works as a social media handle and still sounds right when the whole section yells it.

Most names follow a few patterns. Mascot wordplay gives Bulldogs The Dog House, Hawks The Nest and Knights the Knight Shift. Color crews build on school colors, as in Blue Crew, The Red Sea or Maroon Platoon. Others describe where the students stand, how loud they plan to be, or the theme nights they are known for, from blackouts to construction gear. School life jokes such as Detention Section and Mandatory Fun work well for high schools because every student gets the reference.

Whatever you pick, run it past your athletic director or student government first. A name that teases your own crowd is fun. One that targets opponents, officials or any group of people will get a section shut down fast.

How to choose student section names

  • Start with your mascot and colors. Wordplay on either one, like The Hive for Hornets or Purple Reign for a purple school, makes the name yours without needing the school name in it.
  • Test it as a chant and as a shirt. Two to four syllables chant best, and a short name leaves room for a graphic on the back.
  • Keep the joke pointed at yourselves. Names about being loud, late or short on sleep age better than names that mock a rival.
  • Get it approved. Many schools want student section names, shirts and social accounts cleared by the athletic department or activities office before they go public.
  • Set up the section's social account as soon as the name is settled, so game themes, travel plans and shirt orders have one home.

Frequently asked questions

What is a student section?

It is the block of seats, usually close to the court or field, set aside for a school's own students. Sections stand for most of the game, lead chants, coordinate theme nights and often have a name, a logo and student leaders of their own.

How do we choose a name everyone will use?

Shortlist five or six names, then put them to a vote through student government or the section's social account. Names that are easy to chant, such as The Pit, Blue Crew or Rink Rats, tend to stick because students can use them on the first night.

Can we use our school name or logo with the section name?

Usually yes, but ask first. School names, logos and mascots are controlled by the school or district, and colleges often license theirs. Check with the athletic department before printing shirts or banners.

Are there names for sports other than football and basketball?

Yes. The list includes names tied to specific venues and sports, such as Glass Bangers for hockey, Block Party for volleyball, Flip Turn Fanatics for swimming and Bell Lap Believers for track.
