Class Section Name Generator
Theme words for school sections, in matching sets
Generate class section names for a school year: theme words that follow a grade or the word Section, such as Sampaguita, Narra, Emerald, Perseverance, Orion and Curie. The 1,000 names come in families (flowers, trees, gems, values, scientists, heroes, stars), so one grade can take a matching set.
About class section names
Many schools split each grade into sections and give every section a theme word instead of a letter. In the Philippines a class is Grade 7 Sampaguita or Grade 10 Rizal; in India a school may run Section Ganga beside Section Yamuna. The usual practice is one family of words per grade level, so the sections of a grade match and none sounds ranked above another.
This list is built from those families. There are flowers (Sampaguita, Jasmine, Dahlia), trees (Narra, Molave, Banyan), gems (Emerald, Sapphire, Topaz), values in English, Tagalog, Hindi and Sanskrit, planets and constellations, birds, animals, colors, fruits, rivers, mountains and figures of classical myth. Scientists, national heroes and authors appear with a short label, as in Curie (Marie Curie, physicist and chemist), so a teacher can see who the namesake is. Tagalog, Hindi and Sanskrit words carry a plain gloss in the same way.
A set works best when its words are equals. Gems, flowers and virtues do that well. Medals and anything that reads as first, second and third do not, which is why Gold, Silver and Bronze and the Greek letters are left out. The part in parentheses is for choosing; on the door sign and the class record, the name before the parentheses is the section name.
How to choose class section names
- Choose one family for each grade level and take all of that grade's sections from it: Grade 7 from flowers, Grade 8 from trees, Grade 9 from gems. Students and parents then know the grade from the name alone.
- Count your sections before you settle on a theme. The nine Muses, from Calliope to Urania, make a neat set for nine sections and leave a tenth without a name; flowers, virtues and gems run to dozens.
- Keep the words equal in weight. Avoid any set in which one name sounds like the top section, and reshuffle the names each year so that no word stays tied to one group of students.
- For a namesake, pick a person the students will meet in that year's lessons, such as Balagtas for a Filipino class or Newton and Faraday for a physics year. For a Tagalog, Hindi or Sanskrit word, ask a teacher of the language to confirm the form and spelling used in your region.
- Say it aloud with the grade in front: Grade 4 Mabini, Grade 8 Amethyst. Words of two or three syllables are easier to call out at assembly and fit better on a door sign.
Frequently asked questions
What are good section names for a class?
Good section names are positive single words that come in sets. Flowers such as Sampaguita, Orchid and Dahlia, gems such as Emerald, Sapphire and Topaz, and values such as Honesty, Perseverance and Gratitude are families that many schools use. Pick one family per grade so the sections match.
How many names are in the list, and how are they grouped?
There are 1,000 names. They fall into families: flowers, Philippine flowers and trees, other trees, gems, fruits, values in English, Tagalog, Hindi and Sanskrit, scientists and inventors, national heroes and authors, planets, stars and constellations, birds, animals, colors, rivers, mountains and classical myth. The full A to Z list on this page shows them all.
Why do some names have words in parentheses?
A person's name carries a short label, as in Rizal (Jose Rizal, Philippine national hero) or Raman (C. V. Raman, Indian physicist), and a Tagalog, Hindi or Sanskrit word carries a gloss, as in Matapat (Tagalog, honest) or Ekta (Hindi, unity). The part in parentheses is there to help you choose. Use only the name before the parentheses as the section name. Some entries are the same thing in another language, such as Rose, Rosas and Gulab or Kalachuchi and Frangipani, so check a set for doubles before you assign it.
Why are there no Gold, Silver and Bronze or Alpha and Beta sections?
Sets like those read as a ranking, and a section name should never mark one class as better or weaker than the next. Every family here is made of equals, so Grade 6 Narra and Grade 6 Molave sound like neighbors, not first and second place.
