About animal crossing names

Animal Crossing names follow a few clear conventions that are easy to copy. Player names are capped at eight characters in New Horizons, and villagers address you by that name constantly, so short, soft names win: Mochi, Wren, Juno, Elsie. Official villagers lean on three sources. Food and drink give you Pecan, Merengue, Tangy, Chai and Pudding. Plants and weather give you Fauna, Willow, Poppy, Misty and Flurry. Gentle puns on the species give you Hamlet the hamster, Pekoe the bear cub, Sprinkle the penguin and Purrl the cat.

The game's Japanese roots show up too. Short words like Momo (peach), Hana (flower), Hoshi (star) and Kinako (roasted soybean flour) sound like natural villager names, and plenty of players choose them for cottagecore or kawaii islands. On the other side of the spectrum are plain, slightly old-fashioned human names such as Mabel, Otis, Winnie and Percy, which suit a player character who is supposed to be the one human in town.

This list mixes all of those styles with a handful of fan-favourite official villagers for reference. When choosing, say the name inside a villager greeting, check it fits the character limit, and make sure it reads well in the passport, on the island map and in a Dodo Code friend's chat.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Keep player names to eight characters or fewer (the New Horizons limit) and avoid punctuation, which breaks some villager dialogue lines.
  • For a custom villager or OC, pick a pun on the species or a food in the same colour palette: a pink pig called Marzipan, a grey wolf called Pepper, a yellow duck called Custard.
  • Food, flower and weather words make the most 'canon-sounding' villager names, while ordinary human names work best for the player character.
  • Say the name aloud in a greeting like 'Hey, Clover, what's up?' If it sounds natural in a villager's mouth, it will feel natural in-game.
  • Match the name to your island theme: Japanese words for a zen or sakura island, berry and pastry names for a bakery or pastel build, bird and shell names for a beach town.

Frequently asked questions

How long can an Animal Crossing player name be?

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons a player name can be up to eight characters, including spaces. Older games such as New Leaf and Wild World also used an eight-character cap, and island or town names are limited to ten in New Horizons. Almost every name in this list fits.

Are these real Animal Crossing villager names?

Most are original names written in the same style as the official villagers: food, plants, puns and short human names. A small number of fan favourites like Raymond, Marshal, Judy and Stitches are included for reference, so check before you assume a name is free for an OC.

What makes a name sound like an Animal Crossing villager?

Short, soft and a little sweet. Official villagers are usually one or two syllables, often a food (Pecan, Chai), a plant or weather word (Fauna, Misty) or a pun on the animal type (Hamlet the hamster). Hard consonants and long 'serious' names feel out of place.

Can I change my Animal Crossing character name later?

No. In New Horizons your player name is permanent unless you delete the resident and start over, which also wipes their house and inventory, so it is worth picking carefully before confirming.
