Star Trek Planet Name Generator

Star Trek planets follow a handful of naming habits that make them instantly recognisable. The most common is the Federation catalog style: a Greek letter or star name, sometimes a constellation, then a Roman numeral marking the planet's position from its sun. Omicron Ceti III, Gamma Trianguli VI, Ceti Alpha V and Tau Cygna V all work this way, and the numeral matters: a world is usually the third, fourth or fifth planet, where a habitable orbit is plausible, rarely the first or the tenth.

Homeworlds break the pattern and simply carry the name a species uses for itself: Vulcan, Qo'noS, Romulus, Bajor, Ferenginar, Betazed, Andoria, Talax. Klingon, Romulan and Cardassian names keep the phonology of their languages, so apostrophes, hard consonants and doubled vowels all signal who lives there. When a star system has several inhabited planets, the capital is marked with Prime (Cardassia Prime, Tellar Prime, Azati Prime) and the others get numerals.

The rest of the list uses Trek's less formal conventions: colonies named for Earth places or founders (Terra Nova, Sherman's Planet, New Sydney), alphanumeric survey designations for barely charted rocks (Holberg 917G, Kiley 279, AR-558), and single evocative words for Delta Quadrant worlds met once and never again (Sikaris, Quarra, Ocampa). Mix two or three styles across a sector and the map reads like a real star chart.
