Ghostbusters Name Generator
Busters, nicknamed ghosts and classified apparitions
Ghostbusters names of every kind the films use: the cast from Peter Venkman to Slimer, then new busters such as Dr. Marvin Plotkin, nicknamed ghosts such as Sock Snatcher, classified spooks such as Class Three Wall-Walking Wisp and titled entities such as Morzul the Latchkeeper.
About Ghostbusters names
The franchise names four kinds of thing. The busters are rumpled academics with a surname stitched on the chest: Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, Egon Spengler, Winston Zeddemore. Ghosts get blunt nicknames for a habit or a look, such as Slimer and Muncher. Gods, their servants and old tyrants carry a name plus an office or a homeland, as in Gozer the Gozerian, Zuul the Gatekeeper and Vigo the Carpathian. And spooks are filed by type in mock-scientific phrases on the pattern of Class Five Full-Roaming Vapor.
Close to sixty entries are from the films and cartoons: the cast, a few ghosts, the three classification phrases from the first film and some gear, among them Ecto-1 and Proton Pack. They are a reference block and not a full cast list. Everything else is new and written in the style, not taken from the films or cartoons.
The new names follow the same four habits and add three more: busters with nametag surnames (Stu Grabowski, Dr. Hattie Lindqvist), nicknamed ghosts (Sock Snatcher, Old Wheezy), classified apparitions (Class Three Wall-Walking Wisp), titled entities with coined names that belong to no real mythology (Morzul the Latchkeeper), cases built around possessed objects and haunted places, gear and vehicles on the Ecto-1 pattern, and crews for franchises in made-up cities such as Port Halloway.
How to choose Ghostbusters names
- A buster name works when the surname alone could sit on a uniform tag. Try it in capitals: PLOTKIN, GRABOWSKI and LINDQVIST read right, and a first name like Stu or Hattie keeps the owner human.
- To classify your own spook, stack the facts the way the films do: a class number, how much of it shows, how it moves and what it is. Class Four Semi-Anchored Moaner says it stays put, mostly, and complains.
- Nickname a ghost for the one thing the crew would notice first, a habit or a look: Fridge Raider, Noodle Neck, The Pipe Banger. Blunt and a little rude to the ghost is the house style.
- A big bad needs a name and an office. Pair a coined name with a job that sounds small for a god, as in Xorbal the Notary or Thrumm the Janitor of the Void, and the joke writes itself.
- Keep it spooky and funny. The ghosts on this page are invented pests, never real people who died, and the crews are for stories and tabletop games set in made-up cities.
Frequently asked questions
Which names on this page are from Ghostbusters?
Close to sixty entries, given as names only. They include Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, Egon Spengler, Winston Zeddemore, Janine Melnitz, Dana Barrett, Louis Tully, Phoebe Spengler, Slimer, Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, Gozer the Gozerian, Vigo the Carpathian, Ecto-1 and Proton Pack, along with names from the 2016 film and the cartoons. It is a reference block, not a full cast list. Every other entry is new, and this fan page has no link to the studio.
How do the ghost classifications work?
In the first film the team describes a ghost in stacked technical terms, and the list keeps the three phrases used there: Class Five Full-Roaming Vapor, Focused Non-Terminal Repeating Phantasm and Free-Floating Full-Torso Vaporous Apparition. The new ones copy the recipe: a class number or a behavior, how much of the ghost shows, and what it does, as in Class Two Partial-Torso Hoverer or Recurring Midnight Typist. The class numbers on new entries are for flavor and follow no fixed scale.
Are the gods and demons real mythological names?
No. Names such as Morzul the Latchkeeper, Hezmu the Usher and Zandor the Zandorian are coined for this page in the pattern of Gozer the Gozerian: an invented name plus an office or a place. They are not Sumerian, Babylonian or any other real names, and no real deity appears among the new entries.
Can I use the crew names for a fan group or a business?
They are written for fiction: a story, a tabletop campaign or a game set in an invented city, which is why the places are made up, as in Quillhaven Ghostbusters and Fogwater Slime Removal Service. They are not offered as names for a real company or a real fan chapter, because the franchise name belongs to its owner.
