Every culture has named the spirits that live in its woods, rivers and hills, and those names share a shape. They are short, they are tied to one place, and they tend to describe the spirit's job rather than flatter it: the Slavic leshy is simply 'the forest one', Japan's kodama is the 'tree echo', the Finnish Tapio rules the forest and the Greek naiad belongs to a particular spring. A spirit is rarely grand; it is local, and the name carries a sense of the specific mossy bank or old yew it will not leave.

For original spirits the most convincing names follow the same logic. A soft given name with a place-bound epithet (Elowen of the Silver Birch, Lirael of Still Waters) tells you where the spirit lives and how it should be approached. Kinship titles such as Grandmother Yew or Brother Loam are how real rural communities spoke of the unseen, and kenning-style names like Whisper-of-Reeds or First-Thaw suit spirits that are more weather than person. Names from the underworld or horror (barghests, redcaps) are deliberately left out; these are wardens, not monsters.
