Spanish Hotel Name Generator
Hotel, hostal and posada names in Spanish
A list of 1,000 hotel and inn names in Spanish, each with a short English meaning: Hostal del Sol (small hotel of the sun), Posada de la Luna (inn of the moon), Hacienda Los Olivos (the olive trees), Gran Hotel Costa Azul (blue coast). It covers hotels, hostales, pensiones, posadas, country estates, casas rurales and Latin American hosterías, quintas and estancias.
About Spanish hotel names
A Spanish hotel name usually starts with the kind of place it is. Hotel takes a view or landscape word, as in Hotel Miramar (sea view) or Hotel Bellavista (beautiful view). In Spain a hostal is a small, modest hotel and a pensión a simple guesthouse. Posada, mesón, fonda and venta are the old words for an inn, and a venta stood on the open road, so Venta del Escudero sounds like a stop between towns.
Country places use the word of their region. A cortijo is an Andalusian farmstead, a masía a Catalan farmhouse, a pazo a Galician manor and a caserío a Basque farmhouse, while a casa rural is a country guesthouse anywhere in Spain. Hacienda is the estate word of Mexico and much of Latin America, where hostería and hospedaje name an inn or simple lodging. A quinta is a country house, and an estancia is a ranch of the River Plate countries, Argentina and Uruguay.
The 1,000 names also include grand hotels (Gran Hotel, Palacio, Real), beach hotels built on Playa, Costa and Bahía, saints and convent guesthouses, pilgrim albergues, spa balnearios and one-word names such as Alma (soul) and Sal (salt). The English words in parentheses are a gloss, not part of the name. Keep the articles, accents and ñ exactly as written.
How to choose Spanish hotel names
- Choose the lodging word first, because it sets the size and price a guest expects. Gran Hotel and Palacio promise a grand building, Pensión and Hospedaje a simple room, and Posada or Casa Rural a small place with character.
- Use the country word of your region. Cortijo del Azahar belongs in Andalusia, Masía del Trigo in Catalonia and Pazo de la Ría in Galicia, while Estancia La Querencia belongs on the plains of Argentina or Uruguay and Hacienda Los Nopales in Mexico. Hacienda is also used in Andalusia, where it means an olive estate, so Hacienda Los Olivos fits there too.
- Keep the article and the agreement when you change a word. It is Posada del Río but Posada de la Luna, and Hotel Costa Dorada but Hotel Arenas Doradas. Check the gender of a new noun in a dictionary first.
- Two words change meaning across the ocean. Balneario is a spa in Spain and a seaside resort in Argentina and Uruguay. Parador is the name of Spain's state-run hotel network, so the few Parador names here are roadside stops in the Latin American sense, such as Parador La Tranquera.
- Simple patterns such as Hotel Miramar and Hostal del Sol are used by real hotels in many towns, and we have not checked who uses any name in this list. Search your own town and the booking sites before you order a sign.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a hotel, a hostal and a pensión in Spain?
A hotel is the full-service category, a hostal is a smaller, cheaper hotel with private rooms, and a pensión is a simple guesthouse, usually family run. A hostal is not a backpacker hostel, which in Spain is usually called an albergue. The list has all three, as in Hotel Plaza Mayor, Hostal La Estrella and Pensión Santa Clara.
What do posada, mesón, fonda and venta mean?
All four are old words for an inn. A posada is an inn for travelers, a mesón an inn that today is often known for its traditional cooking, a fonda a modest town inn with meals, and a venta an inn on the road between towns. That is why the list has Posada de la Luna (inn of the moon), Mesón del Peregrino (the pilgrim's inn) and Venta La Encrucijada (the crossroads).
Which names suit Latin America and which suit Spain?
Hotel, Posada, Hostal and Gran Hotel work on both sides of the Atlantic. Cortijo, Masía, Pazo, Caserío and Casa Rural are words of Spain and its regions. Hacienda, Hostería, Hospedaje, Quinta, Estancia, Rancho and Cabañas read as Latin American, as in Hostería del Volcán, Quinta Los Jacarandás and Rancho Las Cascadas. A few rarer words are local too: an alquería is a Valencian farmhouse, a cigarral a country house outside Toledo, a carmen a walled house with a garden in Granada, a casona a large old family house, and a tambo a wayside inn of the Andes, though in Argentina and Uruguay the same word means a dairy farm.
Are the English meanings part of the name?
No. The words in parentheses only explain the Spanish, so the sign reads Casa Rural El Molino, not Casa Rural El Molino (the mill). Most glosses translate the descriptive part of the name and leave the lodging word, such as Hacienda or Hostal, as it is.
