A list of 1,000 Japanese hotel and inn names, each with its meaning in English: Tsukiakari Ryokan (moonglow), Hoshizora no Yado (inn of the starry sky), Shirakaba-sō (white birch villa), Hotel Miyabi (elegance). It covers ryokan, onsen inns, minshuku, townhouse stays, city hotels, hostels and temple lodgings.

About Japanese hotel names

Japanese lodgings say what they are in the name. A ryokan is a traditional inn, a minshuku a family-run guesthouse, a shukubō a temple lodging, and yado is the plain word for an inn, which is why so many names read as "X no Yado", the inn of something: Hoshizora no Yado, inn of the starry sky. Older houses often use a single ending instead. The suffix -ya means house or shop, -kan a hall, -tei a pavilion, -sō a villa, -an a hermitage and -en a garden, while -rō and -kaku both mark a tall, storied building.

The word in front usually comes from nature, the seasons or good fortune. Tsukikage-tei is the moonlight pavilion, Shirakaba-sō the white birch villa, Hotel Miyabi simply elegance. City business hotels favor auspicious words, highland pensions favor trees and small animals, and hostels and capsule hotels mix English with everyday Japanese.

All 1,000 names carry an English gloss in parentheses and are written in Hepburn romanization, with macrons for long vowels (ō, ū). The list runs through ryokan, onsen inns, minshuku, pensions, city hotels, resorts, townhouse and farmhouse stays, hostels and temple lodgings. Place words are generic, apart from a few old provinces, the Kiso valley, two Edo highways and Mount Fuji, as in Echigo-ya, each named in its gloss.

How to choose Japanese hotel names

  • Pick the ending that fits the building: -ya or -kan for an old house inn, -sō for a villa or lodge in the hills, -an for a small, quiet retreat, -tei for a place with a garden.
  • Keep the gloss on the website even if it is not on the sign. Guests remember Kawabata-ya more easily once they know it means riverside house.
  • Macrons are optional on signage. Many inns print long vowels without the mark, so decide once and spell the name the same way everywhere.
  • Match the word to the setting: sea words such as Shiosai Ryokan belong on a coast, snow words such as Hatsuyuki Ryokan in ski country.
  • Search for existing inns and hotels with the same name before you use one for a business. Common nature words are shared by many real lodgings across Japan.

Frequently asked questions

What do the endings on Japanese inn names mean?

The ending -ya is house or shop, -kan a hall, -tei a pavilion, -sō a villa, -an a hermitage and -en a garden. Momiji-an is the maple hermitage and Shōfū-tei the pine wind pavilion. "No Yado" means "inn of", as in Kaze no Yado, inn of the wind.

What is the difference between a ryokan, a minshuku and a shukubō?

A ryokan is a traditional inn, usually with tatami rooms and meals served to guests. A minshuku is a smaller, family-run guesthouse, and a shukubō is lodging at a Buddhist temple. The list has names for each, for example Ryokan Komorebi, Minshuku Furusato and Shukubō Zazen.

Are these the names of real hotels in Japan?

The names were drafted for this list from common Japanese words and naming patterns, not copied from a hotel directory. Inns all over Japan draw on the same nature and good-fortune words, so a real lodging may share a name with one here. Search before you use a name for a business.

How are the long vowels pronounced?

A macron marks a vowel held for two beats: the ō in Tōge Ryokan is a long o, and the ū in Yūnagi Ryokan is a long u. A long vowel can change the meaning of a word, which is why the list keeps the marks.
