Skater names work on three levels. First there is the real name that goes in the credits of a video part, and skateboarding's talent pool is global: Southern California and the East Coast, the Brazilian pipeline (Vasconcelos, Nascimento, Teixeira), Japan's park and street prodigies (Sakamoto, Shimizu, Watabe), plus Spain, France, Scandinavia and Australia. A believable skater name usually sounds casual and young: Mikey rather than Michael, Danny rather than Daniel, Tess rather than Theresa.

Second is the nickname, which skaters earn rather than choose. Nicknames come from a signature trick (Noseblunt Nick, Slappy Sal), a stance (Goofy Gil, Mongo Mo), a spot (Deep End Dez, Parking Lot Pete) or a habit (Last Try Lou, Sketchy Scott). Alliteration is common because it is easy to yell across a skatepark, but the most authentic nicknames are one or two words dropped between a first and last name: Cole "Crooks" Ashby, Nina "Kickflip" Brisbois.

Third is the handle: a short, lowercase-friendly tag for a skate Instagram, a crew or a game character, like Grindhog, Curbhound or Sk8witch.
