Roller derby names are one of the great living naming traditions in sport. When flat-track derby was revived in Austin in the early 2000s, skaters adopted stage names as part of the punk, DIY, alter-ego culture, and the convention stuck. The classic derby name is a pun: a celebrity, character or phrase twisted toward violence or skating (Anita Bruisin', Ella Vader, Skate Winslet, Blockness Monster). Other popular forms include a fake-innocent first name with a brutal surname (Sadie Slaughter), an ironic honorific (Miss Demeanor, Sister Mary Mayhem), and derby-position jokes built on jammer, blocker, pivot and whip.

A good derby name has to work three ways at once: it gets announced over a loudspeaker, it gets printed on the back of a jersey with a number, and it gets shortened to a nickname by teammates. That favors names of two to four words that land the pun immediately, and it is why so many great ones use a real-sounding first name (Ida, Anita, Kay, Sue) as the setup.

Derby names were once registered on a global master roster to keep them unique, and while that requirement has faded, leagues still expect skaters not to copy an existing name. Use this list as a starting point, then bend a name toward your own personality, job or hometown so it belongs to you.
