Shadar-kai Name Generator

Shadar-kai are the elves who followed the Raven Queen into the Shadowfell, and their names reflect that split identity. In Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes and Monsters of the Multiverse they are a subrace of elf, so mechanically and culturally they use elven names: flowing vowels, soft consonant clusters like th, sh, and vr, and endings such as -ith, -eth, -ara, -iel, and -aen. What sets shadar-kai apart is tone. Their names lean toward darker sounds and heavier syllables than the bright, lilting names of high elves.

Official lore also notes that many shadar-kai adopt a family or house name that describes their bleak surroundings or the Raven Queen's domain, which is why compounds like Duskmere, Ravenveil, or Mourningsong feel appropriate. This list mixes single given names, which work for player characters and quick NPCs, with full given-plus-house pairings suited to Shadowfell nobles, Raven Queen cultists, or gloom stalker rangers.

A good shadar-kai name should still sound elven at its core. If it could belong to a wood elf with a slightly grimmer accent, you have the balance right; if it sounds like a demon or a drow, pull back toward the vowels.
