Scottish House Name Generator
Names for the sign at a Scottish gate
House names the way Scottish homes carry them: Gaelic names with short meanings, such as Tigh na Mara (house by the sea) and An Cala (the harbor), anglicized place forms like Ardmore and Kinloch, Scots names like Burnbrae and Cosy Neuk, and Northern Isles names like Da Noost and Langskaill.
About Scottish house names
A Scottish house name usually comes from one of three languages, and it helps to know which. Scottish Gaelic, the language of the Highlands and Hebrides, gives Taigh or Tigh (house) followed by what the house stands beside: Tigh na Mara (house by the sea), Tigh an Uillt (house by the burn), Taigh Geal (white house). Landscape words do the same work: cnoc (hill), druim (ridge), allt (burn), achadh (field). Every Gaelic name here carries a short meaning in parentheses.
The same words turn up in anglicized spelling on gates across the country: Ardmore (big height), Kinloch (head of the loch), Dalmore, Drumbeg. Scots, the Lowland tongue, supplies brae (slope), knowe (knoll), neuk (corner), haugh (riverside meadow) and bield (shelter), and with them Burnbrae, Cosy Neuk and the farm names Mains, Milton and Kirkton. Orkney and Shetland are different again. Their place words come from Norn, the Norse language once spoken there, not from Gaelic: voe (inlet), ayre (shingle beach), quoy (enclosure), skaill (hall).
The rest covers Highland lodges, shore and island names, former uses such as The Old Manse, The Tollhouse and The Doocot, hill and firth views, and a few fond jokes like Dunroamin. Gaelic spelling changes with grammar, so ask a fluent speaker to confirm a Gaelic name before it goes on a sign.
How to choose Scottish house names
- Copy a Gaelic name letter for letter. The grave accent and the changes at the start of a word are grammar: it is Tigh a' Chnuic and Tigh na h-Aibhne, and swapping in another noun by guesswork usually produces a mistake.
- Do not use Taigh Beag for a small house. Written as taigh-beag it is the everyday Gaelic word for the toilet, so this list has no name built on it. Bothan Beag (little bothy) or Dachaigh Bheag (little home) says what you mean.
- Match the language to the place. Gaelic names and their anglicized forms suit the Highlands, Argyll and the Hebrides, Scots names suit the Lowlands, the Borders and the North-East, and voe, quoy and skaill names belong in Orkney and Shetland.
- Let the site choose the name. A house above the shore suits Os Cionn na Mara or Shorehead, a house by a stream Burnfoot or Taobh an Uillt, and an old croft Croit Bheag or The Auld Croft.
- Check an old-use name against the building. The Old Manse, The Old Smiddy or The Tollhouse reads best on a house that really was one, and the neighbors will know.
Frequently asked questions
What are traditional Scottish house names?
Most belong to a few families: Gaelic names such as Tigh na Mara and Taigh Geal, anglicized Gaelic forms such as Ardmore and Kinloch, Scots names such as Braeside and Burnbrae, and former uses such as The Old Manse and The Old Smiddy. Farms add Mains, Milton and Kirkton, and Orkney and Shetland have Norse-rooted names such as Langskaill and Hamnavoe. Many houses simply carry the name of the island or district the family came from, such as Tiree, Lochaber or Galloway.
What do Taigh, Tigh, Cnoc, Druim, Allt and Achadh mean?
Taigh is house, and Tigh is an older spelling of the same word that many gates still use. Cnoc is a hill, druim a ridge, allt a burn and achadh a field. So Cnoc Àrd is high hill, Druim Beag is little ridge and Tigh an Uillt is house by the burn.
Are Scottish Gaelic and Irish house names the same?
They are related but not interchangeable. Scottish Gaelic writes Taigh, or the older Tigh, where standard Irish writes Teach, though Tigh turns up on Irish gates too. The surer sign is the accent, which slopes the other way in Scottish Gaelic, as in Tràigh Bhàn (white beach). Use a Scottish Gaelic form for a house in Scotland, and check it with a speaker.
Can I build my own name from these Gaelic words?
Not safely by swapping words. Gaelic nouns change form inside a phrase (mara comes from muir, uillt from allt), and a word after 'the' often changes its first letter, as cnoc does in Tigh a' Chnuic. Take a name from the list as it is written, or use an anglicized form such as Drumbeg or Craigmore.
