Generate names for pubs, inns and bars in Scotland, such as The Drouthy Piper, MacAskill's Bar, The Herring Quay and The Glen Lyon Inn. Well-known real houses are marked, as in The Pot Still (real, Glasgow), and Scottish Gaelic names carry an English gloss.

About Scottish pub names

Scottish pubs are named in a few plain ways. A country inn takes the name of its glen, loch or hill, or of the trade that fed it: droving, the mail coach, the ferry. A hotel bar is often the Arms of the local estate. City bars in Edinburgh and Glasgow are plainer still: a street or district followed by Bar or Vaults, or the owner's surname, as in MacAskill's Bar and Rennie's Vaults.

Scots words give many names their flavor. A howff is a regular haunt, a neuk is a corner, a brig is a bridge and drouthy means thirsty. A small share of the list is Scottish Gaelic, each with a gloss in parentheses, such as Taigh na Mara (house of the sea). Whisky-trade words, fishing boats, Burns and the old ballads supply the rest.

Fifty entries are well-known real houses, each marked 'real' with its town or area, such as The Sheep Heid Inn (real, Edinburgh). The rest are drafted in the same patterns, and the glens, lochs, hills, streets and fishing villages they name are real places. These patterns are old and common, so an unmarked name may match a pub that exists somewhere: treat it as an idea, and look it up before it goes on a sign.

How to choose Scottish pub names

  • Start with what is outside the door. A bar beside a bridge, a pier or a mill can borrow it, as The Brig Inn, The Herring Quay and The Waulk Mill do.
  • For a surname bar, use your own name or one with a true link to the place. A Mac or Mc name over the door suggests a family behind the bar, so a borrowed one can ring false.
  • Copy a Gaelic name whole, accents included. The noun after 'na' or 'an' changes its form, so swapping in another word from a dictionary usually breaks the grammar. Ask a Gaelic speaker before it is painted on a sign.
  • Use Scots words for what they mean. A howff is a place people keep coming back to and a bothy is a rough shelter, so match the word to the room you have.
  • Before you use a name for a real business, search for it yourself in your town and region. The traditional patterns repeat all over Scotland, and a plain name may already be in use nearby.

Frequently asked questions

Which names in the list are real Scottish pubs?

Fifty are marked 'real' with a town or area, such as The Clachaig Inn (real, Glencoe), The Pot Still (real, Glasgow) and Sandy Bell's (real, Edinburgh). The rest are drafted in traditional patterns and are not marked either way. An unmarked name can still match a pub that exists, because the same patterns have been used again and again, so look it up if that matters for your project.

What do howff, neuk and drouthy mean?

They are Scots words. A howff is a favorite haunt or meeting place, a neuk is a corner or nook, and drouthy means thirsty, as in The Drouthy Piper. A brig is a bridge, a clachan is a small village, and a quaich is a shallow two-handled drinking cup.

How are the Gaelic pub names put together?

Many use taigh, the Scottish Gaelic word for house, followed by 'of the' and a noun: Taigh na Mara (house of the sea), Taigh a' Chladaich (house of the shore). The second noun changes its form after the article, which is why each name should be copied whole. Tigh is an older spelling of the same word, seen in Tigh an Truish (real, Isle of Seil).

Why is whisky spelled without an e in these names?

Scotch is spelled whisky, while whiskey with an e is the usual Irish and American spelling. The whisky names in the list use trade words instead of brands, such as The Cooper's Rest, The Old Malt Barn and The Worm Tub. A cooper makes casks, and a worm tub is the tank of cold water that cools the coiled copper pipe leading from the still.
