Welsh House Name Generator
Welsh names for house signs, with meanings
500 Welsh-language house names of the kind seen on slate plaques across Wales, each with a short English meaning in brackets: Tŷ Gwyn (white house), Bryn Hyfryd (pleasant hill), Glan y Môr (seashore), Hafan (haven), Yr Hen Ysgol (the old school). Hill, water, field, tree, view, farm and old-building names are all in the list.
About Welsh house names
A Welsh house name is usually two or three plain words about the place: a landscape word first, then what it looks like or what stands beside it. Tŷ Gwyn is the white house, Bryn Hyfryd the pleasant hill, Glan y Môr the seashore, Tan y Graig the house under the rock. The describing word comes second, and y and yr mean "the".
The grammar shows in the spelling. A feminine noun softens the adjective that follows it, so gwyn (white) is unchanged in Tŷ Gwyn and Maes Gwyn but appears as wen in Hafod Wen and Ffynnon Wen, and coch (red) becomes goch in Fron Goch. A feminine noun also softens after y, which is why pont (bridge) turns up as Pen y Bont. The circumflex in Tŷ, Môr, Dôl and Sŵn marks a long vowel and belongs on the sign.
The list covers Tŷ names, hills, water, fields, trees, views and breezes, names of rest and welcome, old buildings such as Yr Hen Ysgol and Yr Efail, and farm words: tyddyn is a smallholding, hafod a summer dwelling on the high pasture and hendre the winter farm below it. Each entry has a short literal meaning in brackets. Before you order a plaque, ask a Welsh speaker to confirm the name and its spelling.
How to choose Welsh house names
- Choose a name that is true of the house. Glan yr Afon suits a riverbank, Tan y Bryn a house below a hill, Trem y Môr one that really sees the sea, and Yr Hen Felin only a building that was once a mill.
- Copy the spelling letter for letter, mutation and circumflex included: Hafod Wen rather than Hafod Gwyn, Pen y Bont rather than Pen y Pont, and Tŷ with its accent.
- Read the meanings as literal guides. Glas covers both blue and the green of grass and leaves, so Bryn Glas is a green hill while Pwll Glas is a blue pool.
- Say the name aloud before you settle on it. Dd is the th of "this", a single f sounds like v, ff like f, and w and y are vowels, so Tŷ rhymes with "tea" and Bryn with "tin".
- Show your choice to a Welsh speaker before a sign is cut, and ask your local council how a new house name is registered, since a neighbor may already use it.
Frequently asked questions
What do Welsh house names mean?
Most of them describe where the house stands or what the building used to be. Bryn Hyfryd is "pleasant hill", Glan y Môr is "seashore", Tan y Graig is "under the rock", Hafan is "haven" and Yr Hen Ysgol is "the old school". Every name in the list has a short literal meaning in brackets after it.
Why is it Tŷ Gwyn but Hafod Wen?
Welsh nouns are masculine or feminine, and a feminine noun softens an adjective that follows it. Tŷ (house) is masculine, so gwyn stays as it is, while hafod is feminine, so the adjective appears as wen. The same rule gives Bryn Glas but Ynys Las, and Cae Mawr but Dôl Fawr.
What is the difference between Hafod, Hendre and Tyddyn?
A hafod was the summer dwelling on the upland pasture where a family took its animals for the warm months, and the hendre was the main farm lower down where they spent the winter. A tyddyn is a smallholding, a cottage with a little land. At the start of names such as Ty'n y Coed, Ty'n is usually explained as a worn-down form of tyddyn.
Can I put one of these names on my own house?
Yes, the choice of a house name is yours. The list was drafted from the common stock of Welsh house and farm names, and we cannot vouch for every form, so ask a Welsh speaker to confirm the spelling and the mutation before you order a sign. Pick a name that fits the place, such as Min y Nant beside a stream or Awel y Mynydd on a windy slope.
