Generate scary nicknames in one word or in "The ..." form: Reaper, Bonesaw, Nightmare, Mad Dog, The Undertaker and Grave Digger, plus quieter chills like Glass Smile and Under the Bed. The list is built from horror fiction, folklore and the natural world rather than from true crime.

About this generator

A scary nickname works by suggestion. It is short, it is usually a thing instead of a person's name, and it lets the listener fill in the rest. Horror fiction has leaned on this for a long time: slasher films and campfire stories give the monster a byname before they give it a face, and wrestling, roller derby and online games borrowed the habit. This list keeps to that tradition. Every entry is a nickname or an epithet: a single word or compound (Reaper, Bonesaw, Widowmaker), a byname with The in front (The Undertaker, The Gravekeeper), or a short phrase (Mad Dog, Grave Digger, Last Rites).

The styles run from loud to quiet. There are graveyard words, agent nouns such as Bonebreaker and Shrieker, predators and vermin like Pit Viper and Plague Rat, rusty tools and old poisons, ghosts and folklore creatures from Banshee to Black Shuck, and mock titles such as Count Cadaver and Granny Grim. The quiet ones are often the most unsettling: Glass Smile, Dial Tone, Under the Bed, The Houseguest.

One thing is left out on purpose. The press nicknames of real murderers belong to stories with real victims, so this page takes its material from fiction, folklore, the haunted house and the animal kingdom instead of true crime.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match the volume to the character. A brawler, a monster truck or a roller derby skater suits a loud name like Skullcracker or Buzzsaw, while a stalking villain is scarier with a quiet one like Whisper, Cold Spot or The Visitor.
  • Test it in a sentence that starts with "They call her" or "They call him". If the name sounds natural there, as The Stitcher and Dead Calm do, it will work in dialogue, on a jersey and over a loudspeaker.
  • For gamertags and usernames, one-word compounds such as Deathgrip, Gravewalker and Fangtooth are quick to type and leave room for a number or a clan tag.
  • Gentle words can be the creepiest. Sweet Dreams, Sleep Tight, Peekaboo and Uncle Shivers unsettle people because they sound friendly.
  • Skip the nicknames of real criminals. They are tied to real harm, many communities will not welcome them, and an invented name is yours to define.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a nickname scary?

Suggestion more than gore. The strongest scary nicknames are short and concrete, and they leave a question open: what does The Stitcher stitch, and why is someone called Two Shovels? Hard consonants help too, which is why Bonesaw, Krait and Gibbet sound harsher than they look.

What are some of the scariest nicknames on the list?

For a loud, physical threat, try Reaper, Skullcracker, Widowmaker or Mad Dog. For a slow, creeping kind of horror, The Undertaker, The Houseguest, Glass Smile and Under the Bed do more with less. Folklore supplies some of the oldest, including Banshee, Black Shuck and Rawhead.

Are the nicknames of real serial killers on the list?

We left them out on purpose. The list draws on horror fiction, folklore, tools, old trades and animals instead of true crime. Many entries are ordinary words and phrases, though, so some have been used as nicknames before, by wrestlers, athletes and fictional characters among others.

Can I use these for a gamertag, a team or a character?

Yes. They suit gamertags, roller derby and wrestling personas, Halloween teams, tabletop villains and horror stories. For an online handle, pair a one-word name with a number or a clan tag, and read the platform's naming rules yourself, since some filter violent words.
