Salamander Name Generator

The salamander has two lives in naming. In myth and alchemy it is the elemental beast of fire: Pliny and medieval bestiaries claimed it lived in flames, Paracelsus made it the fire elemental alongside gnomes, sylphs and undines, and Dungeons & Dragons turned it into a serpent-bodied creature from the Elemental Plane of Fire that speaks Ignan and serves efreeti. Names in that tradition are drawn from heat and volcanoes (Ember, Kiln, Vesuvius), fire deities and spirits (Vulcan, Hestia, Agni, Surtr, Ifrit) and harsh, hissing Ignan-style constructions like Ashkarath, Zhurakk or Ithraxx Coal-Eater.

The real animal is a damp, cold-blooded amphibian, and pet owners name it very differently. Newts, tiger salamanders and axolotls tend to get soft, silly or descriptive names such as Newt, Squiggle, Speckle, Mudpie or Sir Newton, plus spice and color names for orange and red species: Paprika, Rusty, Marigold.

For a fantasy creature or elemental companion, reach for the mythic and Ignan names; for a character with a comic streak or an actual tank in the corner of the room, the pet names fit better. Fire salamanders in the wild are black with yellow spots, so Speckle or Marbles works surprisingly well on either side.
