Presidential names carry weight because history has trained us to hear them a certain way. Surnames do most of the signalling. Anglo names like Whitmore, Fairfax, Sterling and Rutherford evoke old dynasties; Irish and Italian names such as Sullivan and Fitzgerald suggest a Kennedy-style rise; names like Okonkwo, Quintana, Raman or Kowalski tell a first-generation story. Outside the United States, presidents of republics from Brazil to Georgia to Ghana carry their own naming conventions, and this list includes plausible heads of state such as Beatriz Oliveira, Salome Kalandadze and Kwame Nkosi for global political fiction.

Every entry is written with the title so it reads the way it would in a news report or a chapter heading. Drop the title for ballots and campaign posters, or add a middle initial for gravitas.
