Politician Name Generator

A good politician name has to survive a yard sign, a debate podium and a newspaper headline. That is why real politicians so often have short first names and surnames with strong consonants: Kennedy, Reagan, Obama, Bush, Pelosi. Fictional politicians follow the same rules. Josiah Bartlet, Selina Meyer, Jack Stanton and Bill McKay all sound like people who could plausibly win a county, and that plausibility is what makes political fiction land.

The name also tells voters a story. An old Anglo or Dutch surname with a Roman numeral (Clayton Beaumont III, Amelia Van Der Berg) signals inherited money and a family seat in the Senate. Nicknames and diminutives (Bud Landry, Buck Rawlings, Skip Vandermeer, Bonnie Lou Sadler) read as folksy populists from a rural district. Immigrant and hyphenated surnames (Emilio Castellanos, Rosa Delgado-Frye, Adaeze Okafor, Priya Venkatesan) suggest a first-generation reformer or a coalition-builder in a big city. Choosing between these signals is often more useful than the title itself.
