About random hospital names
Real hospital names follow a small number of patterns, and matching them is what makes a fictional hospital sound believable. The oldest pattern is religious: hospitals founded by Catholic orders and Protestant churches carry names like St. Mary's, Sacred Heart, Mercy, Providence, Good Samaritan, Baptist and Methodist, while Jewish hospitals gave us Mount Sinai, Beth Israel and Cedars-Sinai. A second pattern honours a person or a war: Memorial hospitals (Grady Memorial, Parkland Memorial, Whitmore Memorial) usually commemorate a benefactor or fallen soldiers.
Public and academic hospitals use place and function instead. County General, City Hospital, University Medical Center and Regional Medical Center tell you who owns the building; adding a geographic name (Riverside, Highland Park, Blue Ridge, Harborview) tells you where it is. Suffix choice also matters: Hospital is the traditional word, Medical Center suggests a large modern complex, Regional Medical Center means it serves several counties, and Infirmary or Royal Hospital signal a British or Commonwealth setting. Specialty institutions add their focus, as in Children's Hospital, Eye and Ear Infirmary or Comprehensive Cancer Center.

- Choose the naming pattern that fits the hospital's origin story: a saint or order name for a Catholic foundation, Memorial for a benefactor, County or City for a public safety-net hospital, University for a teaching hospital.
- Attach a local place name (a river, neighbourhood or founder) to a generic suffix to make it feel rooted: Willow Creek Medical Center sounds real; Advanced Care Hospital does not.
- Use Medical Center for a big modern campus and Hospital for an older or smaller institution; Infirmary, Royal or Hôpital instantly moves the setting outside the US.
- For a hospital drama, give the building a name people can shorten in dialogue ('take him to St. Vincent's', 'she's at County'), since staff rarely say the full name.

Why are so many hospitals named after saints?
Many hospitals were founded by Catholic religious orders (Sisters of Mercy, Sisters of Charity, Sisters of Providence) and Protestant denominations, and they named institutions for saints, orders or virtues. Names like St. Mary's, Mercy and Providence still mark that heritage even after mergers.
What is the difference between a hospital and a medical center?
Legally there is little difference, but Medical Center is usually used for larger campuses that combine inpatient care, outpatient clinics, research and teaching. Smaller or older institutions tend to keep the plain word Hospital.
Are these real hospitals?
