World of Warcraft names work best when they match the race you are playing, because each Azerothian people has a distinct sound. Humans of Stormwind, Lordaeron and Kul Tiras use medieval European names (Anduin, Jaina, Bolvar, Taelia) with English-sounding surnames. Dwarves are Norse and Scottish flavored (Magni, Muradin, Moira, Brann) with forge and stone surnames. Night elves use long, flowing names heavy on l, r, s and y (Tyrande, Malfurion, Shandris, Maiev). Draenei double their vowels (Velen, Nobundo, Ishanah, Yrel). Orcs are guttural and short (Thrall, Grommash, Durotan, Draka) with clan or deed names, trolls use apostrophes and Caribbean-inflected sounds (Vol'jin, Zul'jin, Rokhan, Talanji), tauren draw on Indigenous American-style names (Baine, Cairne, Hamuul, Aponi), and blood elves favor sun and light compounds (Kael'thas, Liadrin, Lor'themar).

Because every realm requires unique names and 20 years of players have claimed the obvious ones, the biggest problem is not creativity but availability. Names based directly on lore characters are usually taken or blocked. The list above avoids canon characters entirely and instead builds new names from each race's real phonetic rules, grouped roughly in the order human, dwarf, gnome, night elf, draenei, worgen and Kul Tiran, vulpera, orc, troll, tauren, blood elf, Forsaken, goblin, pandaren, Zandalari, void elf, nightborne, Highmountain, dracthyr.
