Pooka Name Generator
Shape-changing trickster names from Irish and Welsh folklore
Generate pooka names for the shape-changing trickster of Irish, Welsh and Cornish folklore: names with a wink like Tadhg of the Ditch and Mab Longears, night-ride horses like Bramblehoof, hare, goat and dog forms, and modern pookas such as Declan from the Night Bus. The 1,000 names suit fantasy fiction, tabletop characters and folklore-flavored worldbuilding.
About pooka names
The pooka (Irish púca, also spelled phouka; Welsh pwca, Cornish bucca) is a shape-changer of Irish and British folklore. It turns up as a black horse with glowing eyes, a goat, a hare or a big dog, offers a tired traveler a lift, and leaves them in a ditch miles from home by morning. Other tales make it a helper that does the kitchen work at night, and harvest custom left the last of the crop in the field as the pooka's share.
Folklore names the creature but almost never gives one a personal name, so the names here are invented in the spirit of the tales, not taken from them. The pattern is a Gaelic sound, an animal and a wink: a real Irish given name with a byname (Tadhg of the Ditch, Aoife of the Bramble Gap), a Welsh or Cornish form (Pwyll Hare-Shadow, Bucca of the Nets), or a single compound such as Bramblehoof.
The 1,000 names run through fifteen styles: night-ride horses, hares and rabbits, goats, dogs, foxes and cats, harvest and November names, boastful liar's titles like Honest Finnegan, gentle household helpers, sinister road-haunters, and modern pookas who go by Declan from the Night Bus. Irish-language bynames follow real grammar, so Púca na hOíche reads as 'pooka of the night'.
How to choose pooka names
- Start with the shape. A horse pooka wants hooves, manes and night roads in its name (Cinderhoof, Gallop-till-Dawn), a hare wants ears and fields (Moon-Gazer, Stubble-Runner), and a household helper wants the kitchen (Scullery Jack).
- Pair a real Irish or Welsh given name with a plain English byname. Fiachra Burrowlight or Gwion Lantern-Out sounds older and stranger than a fully made-up fantasy name.
- Give a liar an honest title. Pookas boast, so Honest Finnegan, Truthful Tadhg or Lord of Seven Parishes tells the reader at once not to believe a word.
- For urban fantasy, use an ordinary name with one detail slightly off, such as Nightshift Niall or The Dog Walker with No Dog.
- Keep the Irish as written. Accents and lenition (Síle Dhubh, Púca an Bhóthair) carry the grammar, so copy a name whole instead of trimming it.
Frequently asked questions
What is a pooka?
A pooka is a shape-changing spirit of Irish folklore, called púca in Irish, with close relatives in the Welsh pwca and the Cornish bucca. It most often appears as a black horse, but also as a goat, a hare, a dog or a person. It is a trickster more than a monster: in most tales its victims end up muddy, lost and shaken, not hurt.
Are these pooka names from real folklore?
Mostly not, and the list does not pretend otherwise. The old stories name the creature (púca, pooka, phouka, pwca, bucca) but rarely give an individual one a name, so nearly all of the 1,000 names are inventions built from real Irish, Welsh and Cornish given names and from folklore motifs. The few traditional terms in the list, such as Bucca Dhu and King Puck, are old words and titles, and Pwca'r Trwyn, the pwca of Trwyn farm in Welsh tales, is the rare one with a name of its own.
Is Harvey the rabbit a pooka?
Yes. In the 1944 play Harvey and the 1950 film made from it, the invisible rabbit of the title is described as a pooka. Harvey is in the list as a nod to that story, and names like The Six-Foot Rabbit and Mister Ears play with the same idea without borrowing anything else from it.
Can I use these names for a pooka character in a tabletop game?
Yes. Several fantasy games and novels have animal-eared pooka characters, and the two-part names here (Nettle Quickfoot, Burdock Halfwink, Sorrel Latchlifter) are written with that kind of player character in mind. They are not taken from any game's books, so follow your own setting's naming rules where it has them.
