Aztec God Name Generator
Mexica gods, goddesses, epithets and calendar names
A reference list of the gods and goddesses of the Mexica (Aztecs): Huitzilopochtli, Tezcatlipoca, Tlaloc, Coatlicue and Xochiquetzal, epithets such as Titlacauan and Yohualli Ehecatl, named members of groups such as the Centzon Totochtin, and calendar names such as Nahui Ollin. About a quarter of the 500 entries are original deity names built from Nahuatl roots, and each of those carries a domain after a comma, as in Quiauhcoatl, Serpent of the First Rains.
About Aztec god names
The Mexica, the Nahuatl-speaking people of Tenochtitlan usually called the Aztecs, honored many gods, and one god could carry many names. Tezcatlipoca is also Titlacauan, Yohualli Ehecatl and Necoc Yaotl; the old fire god is Xiuhtecuhtli, Huehueteotl and Ixcozauhqui. Most of what is known was written down in the sixteenth century, above all by Bernardino de Sahagun and his Nahua collaborators.
Gods also came in groups, listed by group name and by member: the Centzon Totochtin of pulque, the Tlaloque who serve Tlaloc, the Cihuateteo, the Tzitzimime and the five Ahuiateteo. Day names of the tonalpohualli, the 260-day count, pair a number from 1 to 13 with one of twenty day signs. A few are recorded as a god's own calendar name or feast day, such as Ce Acatl for Quetzalcoatl and Nahui Ollin for the present sun. Most day names here are plain days of the count.
Just under a quarter of the entries are original: names built from Nahuatl roots such as coatl (serpent), xochitl (flower), tecuhtli (lord), cihuatl (woman), teotl (god), ehecatl (wind), citlalin (star) and itztli (obsidian), and a few everyday Nahuatl words for plants and animals given a divine role. Each original has a domain after a comma, as in Mixcihuatl, Lady of Low Clouds, so it cannot be mistaken for a recorded god.
How to choose Aztec god names
- Read a day name as a number plus a sign. Ce is 1, Ome 2, Yei 3, Nahui 4, Macuilli 5, Chicuace 6, Chicome 7, Chicuei 8, Chiconahui 9 and Matlactli 10, and Matlactli Once, Matlactli Omome and Matlactli Omei are 11, 12 and 13. So Chicuei Mazatl is 8 Deer and Matlactli Omome Ocelotl is 12 Jaguar.
- The twenty day signs are Cipactli (crocodile), Ehecatl (wind), Calli (house), Cuetzpalin (lizard), Coatl (serpent), Miquiztli (death), Mazatl (deer), Tochtli (rabbit), Atl (water), Itzcuintli (dog), Ozomatli (monkey), Malinalli (grass), Acatl (reed), Ocelotl (jaguar), Cuauhtli (eagle), Cozcacuauhtli (vulture), Ollin (movement), Tecpatl (flint), Quiahuitl (rain) and Xochitl (flower).
- Use an epithet when you want one face of a god. Yohualli Ehecatl, night and wind, is Tezcatlipoca as a presence that cannot be seen or touched, and Tloque Nahuaque is the lord of the near and the nigh.
- For a deity of your own, start from an entry with a domain after the comma, such as Tepecoatl, Guardian of Mountain Passes, and leave the recorded names to the gods they belong to.
- Nahuatl is a living language and the Nahua are a living people. Write about these gods with the care you would give any living tradition, and look a name up in a scholarly source before you call it historical.
Frequently asked questions
Who are the main Aztec gods?
Huitzilopochtli, the patron of the Mexica, and Tlaloc, the rain god, shared the Great Temple of Tenochtitlan. Tezcatlipoca, Quetzalcoatl, Xipe Totec, Tonatiuh, Xiuhtecuhtli and Mictlantecuhtli are among the other great gods. The leading goddesses include Coatlicue, Chalchiuhtlicue, Xochiquetzal, Tlazolteotl, Chicomecoatl and Cihuacoatl.
Are all 500 names real Aztec gods?
No. About half are recorded deities, epithets and group names. About a quarter are day names of the 260-day count, and only some of those are recorded as a god's own calendar name or feast day. The rest are original names built from Nahuatl roots, and each one shows a domain after a comma, as in Citlalcihuatl, Lady of the Evening Star.
Which Aztec goddesses are on the list?
Coatlicue, Coyolxauhqui, Chalchiuhtlicue, Xochiquetzal, Tlazolteotl, Mictecacihuatl, Chicomecoatl, Xilonen, Mayahuel, Itzpapalotl, Cihuacoatl, Toci and Chantico are all here, along with less familiar figures such as Huixtocihuatl, the goddess of salt, and the healer Tzapotlatenan. Titles such as Teteo Innan, mother of the gods, and Tonantzin, our revered mother, are entries too.
Where are the Lords of the Day and the Lords of the Night?
They are two sets of gods tied to the calendar: thirteen who go with the numbered days and nine who rule the nights in turn. They are familiar gods in a calendar role and not separate beings, so they appear under their own names, for example Xiuhtecuhtli, Tlaloc, Tepeyollotl and Itztli.
