Generate Pikmin-style names: captains and castaways like Captain Pello, field-guide creatures like Speckled Puddlewog, deadpan treasures like Fingertip Helmet and nicknames for a single Pikmin like Snowpea, after an opening run of names from the games.

About Pikmin names

Names in Nintendo's Pikmin games come in very different flavors. The explorers have short, friendly names (Olimar, Louie, Alph). The creatures have field-guide names that weld a describing word to an odd genus word (Burrowing Snagret, Fiery Blowhog). The treasures are ordinary objects given grand, straight-faced names (Courage Reactor, Rubber Ugly).

The list opens with 66 names from the games, given simply as names: thirteen characters, 42 creatures and eleven treasures. They are a sample, not a full roster, and the questions below spell out which ones they are. Everything else was made up for this page, though a made-up name may happen to match one in the games. There are captain, officer and castaway names such as Captain Pello and Doc Fennel. There are invented creatures such as Speckled Puddlewog and Bashful Crumblebug, built on genus words of our own so that nobody takes them for real species. There are treasure names such as Soup Catapult and Fingertip Helmet. And there are nicknames for one Pikmin, such as Pepperpip, Snowpea and Hard Hat.

The nicknames follow the colors and types players know, from red through to glow, plus a few that fit any sprout. This is a fan page, and the series is named only to say what the names are for.

How to choose Pikmin names

  • For a crew, pick one theme and stick to it. Alph, Brittany and Charlie start with A, B and C, so a squad of Della, Epsie and Zetta, or of Corgan, Sheltie and Beagan, feels like it belongs together.
  • Build a creature from two halves: a word for how it looks or moves, then a made-up genus. Reuse the genus for relatives, the way Lesser Thimblemite and Pygmy Thimblemite share one.
  • Name a treasure as if you had never seen the object before. Say what shape it is and guess wrongly what it is for: a thimble becomes Fingertip Helmet, a lone sock becomes Sock Without a Partner.
  • Nickname a Pikmin for what that one does. The last to arrive is Straggler, the first out of the ground is First Pluck, and the one that always ends up in the water is Wet Sock.
  • Read the name out loud before you keep it. These games are gentle and a bit silly, so the names that fit are easy for a child to say and make a grown-up smile.

Frequently asked questions

Which names here are from the Pikmin games?

Sixty-six of them, placed at the start of the list. The characters are Olimar, Louie, Alph, Brittany, Charlie, Oatchi, Moss, Collin, Shepherd, Russ, Dingo, Yonny and Bernard, and the treasures are Courage Reactor, Spherical Atlas, Geographic Projection, Cupid's Grenade, Sunseed Berry, Citrus Lump, Insect Condo, Face Wrinkler, Crimson Banquet, Wayward Moon and Rubber Ugly. The creatures are listed in the next answer, and every other name was made up for this page.

Which creature names are real ones from the games?

These 42: Red Bulborb, Emperor Bulblax, Burrowing Snagret, Fiery Blowhog, Watery Blowhog, Puffy Blowhog, Yellow Wollywog, Wogpole, Swooping Snitchbug, Bumbling Snitchbug, Iridescent Flint Beetle, Armored Cannon Beetle, Beady Long Legs, Shearwig, Breadbug, Water Dumple, Titan Dweevil, Fiery Dweevil, Anode Beetle, Spotty Bulbear, Careening Dirigibug, Honeywisp, Skitter Leaf, Hermit Crawmad, Bearded Amprat, Gatling Groink, Man-at-Legs, Segmented Crawbster, Ranging Bloyster, Lesser Spotted Jellyfloat, Ravenous Whiskerpillar, Creeping Chrysanthemum, Armored Mawdad, Vehemoth Phosbat, Sandbelching Meerslug, Quaggled Mireclops, Peckish Aristocrab, Skutterchuck, Puckering Blinnow, Puffstool, Smoky Progg and Waterwraith. Every other creature on the page, from Speckled Puddlewog to Dozegrub, was made up here on a genus word of our own, though a made-up name may still happen to match one in the games.

Can I use these for my own character or for one of my Pikmin?

Yes, that is what the made-up names are for. Captain and castaway names such as Marlo, Tansy or Rookie Pim suit a character you create, and the nicknames, such as Snowpea, Big Ears or Hard Hat, are meant for a single Pikmin you want to tell apart from the rest. Shorter ones are the safest choice where a game limits the length of a name.

How are the treasure names made?

Each one describes an everyday object in a grand, deadpan way without saying what it is, which is the joke the games play. Bent Wire of Order is a paper clip, Chewable Planet is a gumball and Lonely Foot Sack is a sock. None of them uses a brand or product name.
