Generate Phyrexian names in the harsh, oil-slick style of Magic: The Gathering's machine-flesh horrors: canon praetors and thanes like Elesh Norn and Vorinclex alongside hundreds of original names for your own compleated characters, Commander decks and fan lore.

About Phyrexian names

Phyrexian names in Magic: The Gathering are built to sound wrong in the mouth. The praetors of New Phyrexia set the pattern: Vorinclex, Urabrask, Sheoldred, Jin-Gitaxias, Elesh Norn. Most are two or three syllables packed with hard consonant clusters (sk, thr, gr, xx), x and z where a human name would have s, and endings like -ax, -ek, -oth, -ix, -rask or -thal. Old Phyrexia under Yawgmoth used the same toolkit a generation earlier with Gix, Tsabo Tavoc, Crovax, Volrath and Tevesh Szat, so the style is consistent across thirty years of cards.

Titles carry the rest of the flavor. Canon Phyrexians almost always appear as a name plus an office: Grand Cenobite, Core Augur, Thane of Contracts, Scion of Atraxa, Carnage Dominus. Each sphere and color has its own vocabulary: cenobites, cantors and the Fair Basilica for Norn's white orthodoxy; augurs, dissectors and Gitaxian surgery for blue; thanes, the Dross Pits and contracts for black; furnace, forge and heresy for Urabrask's red; hunters, goliaths and the Vicious Swarm for green.

The list starts with canon praetors, thanes, dominus and compleated planeswalkers, then moves into original names you can use as-is or pair with a title that fits the faction.

How to choose Phyrexian names

  • Pick the faction first. A white Machine Orthodoxy name wants a clean, liturgical title (Cenobite, Cantor, Herald of Compleation); a black Steel Thanes name wants something mercenary (Thane of Contracts, Executioner); a green Vicious Swarm name should sound like it bites.
  • Keep the name itself short and the title long. Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger and Skrelv, Defector Mite both follow the canon rhythm of a two or three syllable name with a descriptive office.
  • Use hyphens and doubled consonants sparingly. Jin-Gitaxias and Chiss-Goria prove they work, but one or two per roster is plenty before it turns into noise.
  • For a compleated version of an existing character, keep their real name and change the title to something Phyrexian, the way the cards do with Jace, the Perfected Mind or Ajani, Sleeper Agent.
  • Drop the vowels a human name would have. Turning Vendor into Vendorak or Skreth into Skrelv is the quickest way to make a name sound glistening rather than grim.

Frequently asked questions

What do Phyrexian names sound like?

Harsh and clustered. The canon pattern is two to three syllables with x, z, k, th and sk sounds and endings like -ax, -oth, -rask or -ix (Vorinclex, Urabrask, Drivnod, Ixhel), usually followed by a formal title naming the character's office within Phyrexia.

Which canon Phyrexians are included?

The five praetors (Elesh Norn, Jin-Gitaxias, Sheoldred, Urabrask, Vorinclex), Atraxa, the five Dominus, Ixhel, Vishgraz, Geth, Ezuri, Glissa, Old Phyrexians like Yawgmoth, Gix, Tsabo Tavoc and Volrath, and the compleated planeswalkers from March of the Machine. The rest of the list is original.

Can I use these names for a Commander deck or homebrew character?

Yes. Original names are free for deck names, Planechase lore, homebrew cards and tabletop RPG villains. Canon names belong to Wizards of the Coast, so use those for fan projects rather than anything you sell.

How do I turn a normal character into a Phyrexian?

Keep the original name and attach a Phyrexian title, or corrupt the name by swapping soft sounds for hard ones and adding a clustered ending (Mira becomes Mirrothis, Kel becomes Kelvrath). Either approach matches how the cards handle compleated characters.
