Generate Necron names for Warhammer 40,000: Phaerons, Overlords, Nemesors, Crypteks, Lychguard and Destroyer Lords with the Egyptian-flavoured, hard-edged sound of the Necrontyr, plus epithets and tomb-world titles that fit beside Imotekh and Trazyn.

About Necron names

Necron names in Warhammer 40,000 are built on ancient Egyptian sounds run through a metallic filter. Games Workshop's named characters show the pattern: Imotekh (Imhotep), Szarekh, Anrakyr, Zahndrekh, Orikan, Trazyn, Obyron, Szeras. Hard consonants (k, kh, z, sz, tz, dj) sit on Egyptian roots like ankh, khet, nefer, hotep and ptah, and names end in -ekh, -akh, -yr, -yn, -ar or -esh far more often than in soft vowels. Dynasties follow the same rule: Sautekh, Nihilakh, Novokh, Mephrit, Szarekhan.

Rank is almost always spoken with the name. The Silent King Szarekh rules the Triarch; a Phaeron rules a dynasty and an Overlord a tomb world; Nemesors command armies and Vargards serve as bodyguards; Crypteks split into Chronomancers, Plasmancers, Psychomancers and Technomancers; Lokhust, Skorpekh and Destroyer Lords lead the cults of destruction, and Royal Wardens, Lychguard and Triarch Praetorians fill the court. Important Necrons also carry an epithet earned over sixty million years (the Stormlord, the Infinite, the Diviner) or are named with their seat, as in Oltyx of Ithakas.

This list gives bare Necrontyr names, titled court names, epithet names and names bound to a dynasty or tomb world, alongside the canon characters for reference. Use them for Crusade warlords, Kill Team leaders, homebrew dynasties or fiction.

How to choose Necron names

  • Lead with the rank: Overlord Khenrahtekh or Nemesor Thoszar reads as 40k in a way a bare name does not, and it tells your opponent what the model is.
  • Earn the epithet in play. Start a Crusade warlord as plain Vaszekh and add the Undying after the battle where he refused to stay dead; players remember names with a story.
  • Lean on kh, z, sz and tz for the metallic edge (Szorekh, Tzahrekh) and use Egyptian roots (ankh, nefer, hotep, amun) only as seasoning, otherwise the name drifts into Tomb Kings territory.
  • Female Necrons existed in life and exist in the lore, so Phaerakh, Nefrusar or Tiyesh are as valid as any Phaeron; the codex uses Phaerakh for a female dynastic ruler.
  • Keep the canon characters (Imotekh, Trazyn, Orikan, Szeras, Anrakyr) as references and name your own Necrons something original so they do not clash at the table.

Frequently asked questions

What do Necron names sound like?

Like ancient Egyptian filtered through metal. The named characters, Imotekh, Szarekh, Anrakyr, Zahndrekh, Orikan, Trazyn, Obyron and Szeras, combine Egyptian roots with hard consonant clusters (kh, sz, tz, dj) and endings such as -ekh, -akh, -yr and -yn. Dynasty names like Sautekh, Nihilakh and Novokh follow the same pattern.

What titles do Necron lords use?

Szarekh is the Silent King of the Triarch. A Phaeron (or Phaerakh if female) rules a dynasty, an Overlord rules a tomb world or region, a Nemesor commands armies and a Vargard guards a lord. Crypteks are Chronomancers, Plasmancers, Psychomancers or Technomancers, Destroyer cults are led by Lokhust, Skorpekh and Destroyer Lords, and the court includes Royal Wardens, Lychguard and Triarch Praetorians.

How do I name a Necron for a Crusade or Kill Team?

Pick a bare name from the list, add the rank that matches the model, and give it an epithet or a home once it has done something memorable: Overlord Tzaroth, Overlord Tzaroth the Patient, Overlord Tzaroth of Sarnekh. Pair the name with a dynasty (canon like Mephrit, or your own) and reuse the dynasty's sound across your Lords and Crypteks so the force feels like one court.

Are the named Necrons in this list canon?

The canon characters included for reference are Szarekh, Imotekh, Trazyn, Orikan, Illuminor Szeras, Anrakyr, Zahndrekh, Obyron and a few from the Forge World and Black Library range such as Thaszar, Kutlakh, Toholk, Oltyx and Djoseras. Everything else is original and free to use for your own army, though you should check your tournament's rules on naming models after official characters.
