About Night Vale names

Welcome to Night Vale is a podcast told as community radio from a small desert town, and its names work the way its news does: something ordinary is read out calmly, and then a tag makes it strange. Old Woman Josie, Intern Dana and Carlos the Scientist are a plain first name with a role. John Peters (you know, the farmer) is a plain full name with an aside. Others have only a description, like the Man in the Tan Jacket and the Glow Cloud.

This list keeps the same habits. There are residents with everyday American names of many origins (Lucinda Trujillo, Harlan Osei), residents with an aside (Ruth Akintola (no relation), Gus Paloma (currently a column of light)), tradespeople (Dolores the Locksmith), interns, scientists and radio staff, and officials whose titles run longer than their names, such as Registrar of Doors Amadeo Finch. The nameless get descriptions (The Woman Who Waits by the Car Wash), and the things in the sky get polite ones (The Beige Presence, That Which Idles Near the Overpass). Pets, committees, businesses, places and civic holidays fill out the town.

Thirty entries are from the podcast and are named in the questions below. Everything else is original, written for fan fiction, tabletop games and radio bulletins of your own.

How to choose Night Vale names

  • For a resident, start with a name you could find in any phone book and add one calm aside in parentheses. Ruth Akintola (no relation) works because the name is ordinary and the aside explains nothing.
  • Give a role instead of a surname when a character is known for one thing: Dolores the Locksmith, Intern Rashid, Coach Dombrowski.
  • For an official, let the title carry the joke and keep the person's name plain. Commissioner of Unexplained Lights Rita Sokolov reads best in a flat announcer's voice.
  • For something that should not be named, say where it is or what it does, politely and without horror adjectives: The Presence in Aisle Nine, The Weather That Looks Back.
  • Read the name aloud as if it were the third item in a community calendar. If it still sounds like routine news, it fits.

Frequently asked questions

Which names on this list are from Welcome to Night Vale itself?

Thirty: Cecil Palmer, Carlos the Scientist, Old Woman Josie, Intern Dana, Intern Maureen, John Peters (you know, the farmer), Hiram McDaniels, The Faceless Old Woman Who Secretly Lives in Your Home, The Man in the Tan Jacket, The Glow Cloud, Steve Carlsberg, Mayor Pamela Winchell, Tamika Flynn, Khoshekh, Station Management, The Sheriff's Secret Police, Desert Bluffs, Radon Canyon, Big Rico's Pizza, The Dog Park, Earl Harlan, Telly the Barber, Michelle Nguyen, Larry Leroy, Out on the Edge of Town, Moonlite All-Nite Diner, Street Cleaning Day, Leann Hart, Marcus Vanston, The Whispering Forest and Huntokar. Everything else is original and is not part of the podcast. This is a fan page with no connection to the makers of the show.

How do I name a Night Vale OC?

Decide whether the character is a resident, a member of staff or something less defined. A resident gets an everyday name and at most one tag, such as Bea Winslow (the one who hums) or Paul the Unrelated. An intern or an official gets the job first and the name second, as in Intern Xochitl or Comptroller Hana Villareal.

What makes a name sound like Night Vale and not like ordinary horror?

Understatement. The names here stay away from gore and threats and treat the impossible as a minor civic matter: The Mild Dread, The Friendly Void on Fourth Street, The Subcommittee on Doors. If a name could run in a town newsletter without comment, it has the right tone.

Can I use these names for my own town?

Yes, that is what the original names are for. Places such as Antimony Flats and Mesa Verity and businesses such as Dusty's Tire and Prophecy can furnish a setting of your own, and Mandatory Kite Day gives it a calendar. The thirty names from the podcast belong to it, so treat those as references and build your cast from the rest.
