New York Name Generator

New York place names are a stack of four languages laid down in order. The Lenape and Iroquoian layer survives in words like Canarsie, Manhasset, Sagaponack, Canajoharie and Skaneateles, usually attached to water, necks of land or hills. The Dutch layer left Brooklyn, Harlem, the Bowery, Spuyten Duyvil, every -kill (creek), -wyck and -hook, and a roster of surnames that became streets and neighborhoods: Stuyvesant, Wyckoff, Lefferts, Van Cortlandt, Schermerhorn. The English added Kings, Queens, Richmond, Fort names and the Slips that once cut into the East River shoreline. A fictional New York name convinces when it borrows one of those layers. An NYC neighborhood wants a Dutch or English surname plus Hill, Hook, Point, Heights, Flats or Slope, or a trade memory like Tinsmith Square or Gashouse Flats. An upstate village wants a founder plus -ville or -burgh, a Dutch -kill, an Iroquoian river word, or a Roman senator. Long Island hamlets lean on -ogue, -auk and Neck.
