Haudenosaunee names, title names and family names
Names from the six Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) nations: recorded names such as Sagoyewatha and Tekahionwake, chiefs' title names like Tadodaho, and family names carried in the communities today, from Tarbell and Longboat to full names like Electa Skenandore.
About Iroquois names
Haudenosaunee, the People of the Longhouse, is the people's own name. Iroquois is the older outside name that reached English through French, and it is the word most people search for. The confederacy joined five nations, the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga and Seneca, and became the Six Nations when the Tuscarora came north in the early 1700s.
A traditional name belongs to a clan, clans pass through the mother, and the clan mothers look after the names. A name is given in ceremony and, by custom, only one living person carries it at a time. The fifty chiefs of the Grand Council hold title names that pass to each successor, so Tadodaho, Deskaheh and Donehogawa have each been carried by many men. They are marked (title), and so is Jigonsaseh, the title of the Mother of Nations, held by a woman.
The list has three layers: title names, names from the historical record labeled by nation, some with an English byname, and the family names of the communities, alone and in full names. The names have not been checked by speakers of the six languages, and spellings are simplified. A real Haudenosaunee name comes from a person's own clan, and the nations' language programs are the place to ask about words and spellings.
How to choose Iroquois names
- Pick the nation first. Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca and Tuscarora are six languages, and the label in parentheses tells you which one a recorded name comes from.
- Treat an entry marked (title) as an office. A character called Skanawati or Tekarihoken is a chief of the Grand Council, raised to the title by his clan mother, not a boy who happened to get the name.
- For a present-day character, use an English or French given name with a community family name, such as Electa Skenandore for an Oneida woman in Wisconsin or Amos Longboat at Grand River. That is how most people appear in public life.
- Match the family name to the place: Tarbell and Lazore at Akwesasne, Diabo and Two-Axe at Kahnawake, Maracle at Tyendinaga, General and Powless at Grand River, Metoxen among the Wisconsin Oneida, Jemison and Redeye among the Seneca.
- Older records were written by Dutch, French and English clerks, so one name can have a dozen spellings. Choose one spelling and keep it through your project.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Iroquois and Haudenosaunee?
They refer to the same confederacy. Haudenosaunee, People of the Longhouse, is the people's own name, while Iroquois is an older name given by outsiders that came into English through French. Many people today prefer Haudenosaunee or the name of their own nation, such as Kanien'kehá:ka for the Mohawk or Onöndowa'ga:' for the Seneca.
How do Haudenosaunee names work?
Traditional names belong to clans and are kept by the clan mothers, who give a name to a child in ceremony and can give it again after its holder has died. Chiefs' titles work the same way on a larger scale, which is why Tadodaho (title) names an office that an Onondaga chief holds today as one did centuries ago. A person could also change names in a lifetime: the Seneca orator recorded as Otetiani in his youth became Sagoyewatha.
What are common Haudenosaunee family names?
They vary by community. The list has Deer, Diabo, Horn and Two-Axe from Kahnawake, Tarbell, Lazore and Oakes from Akwesasne, Hill, General, Longboat and Powless from Grand River, Skenandore and Metoxen from the Wisconsin Oneida, and Jemison, Redeye, Twoguns and Cornplanter from the Seneca. Many came from English, French and Dutch neighbors, and others translate an older name.
Can I rely on these names, and may I use one?
Use them for fiction, games and as a starting point for reading. The list has not been checked by speakers, so a spelling, a nation label or an English byname may be wrong. The full names pair given names with family names and are not meant to name any particular person, and the name of the Peacemaker who founded the confederacy is left out on purpose, because many Haudenosaunee people do not say it outside ceremony. Please do not take a traditional name for yourself, since those names belong to the clans.
