Lamia Name Generator

The original Lamia was a single Greek figure: a queen of Libya loved by Zeus, driven mad by Hera, and turned into a child-devouring monster. Later Greek and Roman writers made "lamiai" a whole class of shape-shifting, blood-drinking seductresses, and by the Renaissance and Keats' poem "Lamia" they had become serpent-bodied women. Modern fantasy runs with that last image: in D&D the lamia is a cunning desert enchantress (sometimes lion-bodied), in Japanese monster-girl media she is a snake-tailed love interest, and in most novels she sits somewhere between siren and serpent.

Good lamia names draw on two wells. The first is classical Greek and Near Eastern: Echidna, Delphyne, Sybaris, Empusa, Mormo, Kyrene, Zenobia, Wadjet, Nefertari, names that sound like they belong to a queen or a goddess and often did. The second is pure sound-play: sibilant coinages built on ss, th, y and long vowels (Syssara, Ophelissa, Vessyra, Ithyssa) that hiss when spoken and end in the feminine -a, -ia or -issa. Blend them and you get names like Thessalia or Kalissra that feel both ancient and reptilian.

For a full character, add a byname that says what she rules or how she hunts: of the Coils, Venom-Kiss, of the Lost Oasis, the Beguiler. Lamias are almost always solitary and proud, so a single grand name plus a title suits them better than a family name.
