Generate HiveWing names that follow the Wings of Fire convention exactly: single insect and arachnid words like Wasp, Cricket, Bloodworm, and Vinegaroon, weighted toward the wasps, beetles, and stinging bugs of Pantala rather than the butterflies reserved for SilkWings. Ideal for fanfiction OCs, roleplay, and hive nobility.

About hivewing names

HiveWings are the ruling tribe of Pantala in Tui T. Sutherland's Wings of Fire, introduced in The Lost Continent arc, and their naming rule is strict and simple: every HiveWing is named after an insect, arachnid, or other bug. Canon examples include Queen Wasp, Cricket, Bloodworm, Cadelle, Katydid, Lady Jewel, Lady Scarab, Bumblebee, Cinnabar, Malachite, Sandfly, Weevil, Yellowjacket, Vinegaroon, Hornet, Tsetse, and Earwig. Names are a single capitalized word, never a surname, and the nine hives are each ruled by a Lady who takes her name as the hive's name (Jewel Hive, Cicada Hive, Wasp Hive).

Because SilkWings are named after butterflies and moths (Luna, Blue, Swordtail, Admiral, Io, Morpho, Fritillary), a good HiveWing name usually avoids Lepidoptera and leans into wasps, beetles, ants, true bugs, flies, orthopterans, and arachnids. Stinging and predatory insects fit the tribe's militaristic culture; obscure but real species (Vinegaroon, Tsetse, Cadelle) fit the series' habit of choosing names most readers have to look up.

The list above sticks to real creatures and body parts a HiveWing might plausibly be named for, plus hive titles for nobles.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Stick to one word: HiveWings are Cricket, not Cricket Stinger, and never carry a family name.
  • Avoid butterflies and moths (Monarch, Luna, Swallowtail); in canon those are SilkWing names, and using one for a HiveWing OC will look like a mistake to fans.
  • Pick something real and slightly obscure, the way Sutherland does with Cadelle, Tsetse, and Vinegaroon; a quick check that the species exists makes the name feel authentic.
  • Match the bug to the character: wasps and hornets for soldiers, beetles for scholars, and parasites like Botfly or Tick for villains the reader is supposed to dislike.
  • For a hive ruler, use the Lady title (Lady Cicada, Lady Vinegaroon) and remember the hive shares her name.

Frequently asked questions

How are HiveWings named in Wings of Fire?

HiveWings are named after insects, arachnids, and other bugs, always as a single word with no surname. Canon examples include Wasp, Cricket, Bloodworm, Cadelle, Katydid, Jewel, Scarab, Bumblebee, Weevil, Yellowjacket, and Vinegaroon.

What is the difference between HiveWing and SilkWing names?

SilkWings are named after butterflies and moths (Luna, Blue, Swordtail, Admiral, Io), while HiveWings take the rest of the bug world: wasps, beetles, ants, flies, crickets, and arachnids. LeafWings, the third Pantalan tribe, are named after plants.

Can a HiveWing be named after a spider or scorpion?

Yes. Arachnids are used in canon, with Vinegaroon (a whip scorpion) and Tarantula both appearing, so Scorpion, Widow, Recluse, and Harvestman are all fair game.

Can I use these names for my Wings of Fire fanfiction or OC?

Yes. Insect words are free to use, and fanfiction and roleplay OCs are exactly what the list is for. Only avoid presenting Wasp, Cricket, or other canon dragons as your own original characters.
