Generate mousefolk names for D&D, Pathfinder, Mausritter, Mouse Guard-style campaigns and woodland fiction: homely given names like Pipkin and Tansy, hedgerow surnames like Thistledown and Barleycorn, plus guardmice, elders, tinkers and thieves.
About mousefolk names
Mousefolk names come from a very specific tradition: Brian Jacques' Redwall, David Petersen's Mouse Guard, Mice and Mystics, Mausritter and the countless D&D homebrew mouse races built on them. In all of those the register is the same. Given names are homely, old-fashioned and slightly rural, the kind of names you would find in a medieval English village or a Beatrix Potter story: Pipkin, Tansy, Oswin, Hollis, Elspeth, Wilmot. Plant names and small-object names (Clover, Thimble, Burr, Wisp) are just as common, and Mouse Guard in particular uses plain Germanic and Celtic names like Saxon, Kenzie and Celanawe without any cutesy spin.
Surnames tell you where a mouse lives and what its family does. The classic shape is a hedgerow compound: a plant, grain, cloth or building word joined to a place ending, so Thistledown, Barleycorn, Candlewick, Hazelcombe and Thatchwell. Occupations double as surnames or titles (Miller, Chandler, Ferrymouse) and communities mark status with honorifics such as Guardmouse, Elder, Matron, Brother or Goodwife rather than grand noble titles.
The thing to avoid is rodent menace. Ratfolk and skaven get hisses and clicks; mousefolk should sound small, warm and brave, like someone who bakes bread and also stands watch against owls.
Tips for choosing a name
- Pair a soft given name with a hedgerow surname: Tansy Millgrove or Oswin Fernhollow reads as mousefolk instantly, while Tansy Bloodfang does not.
- Let the surname describe the family's trade or home. Cheesewright, Candlewick and Ferrymouse all imply a backstory you can use at the table.
- Use honorifics instead of noble titles. Guardmouse, Elder, Matron, Brother, Goodwife and Old tell players how the village sees this mouse without making it sound like a human court.
- For rogues and scouts, swap the cozy first name for a nickname earned on the job, such as Filch, Snaffle, Flick or Pilfer, and keep the gentle surname for contrast.
- Keep the whole name short enough to squeak. Two words, three at most, and leave the four-part family names to the hares.
Frequently asked questions
What should mousefolk names sound like in D&D?
There is no official mousefolk race in 5e, so most tables borrow the Redwall and Mouse Guard convention: plain old-fashioned given names (Pipkin, Oswin, Elspeth) plus a two-part nature surname such as Thistledown or Barleycorn. Harengon and halfling name lists are the closest official reference points.
How are mousefolk names different from ratfolk names?
Ratfolk and skaven names lean on sk, tch and zz sounds and boastful epithets (Skreech Ashwhisker, Queek Headtaker). Mousefolk names go the other way: soft vowels, gentle consonants, village surnames and humble titles. If it sounds like it could be shouted across a marketplace by a miller, it is a mousefolk name.
Do these names work for Mausritter or Mouse Guard?
Yes. Mausritter's random name tables and Mouse Guard's cast (Lieam, Saxon, Gwendolyn, Celanawe) sit in the same homely, slightly medieval register, so the given names and surnames here drop straight into either game. Use the guardmouse and elder titles for patrol leaders and settlement heads.
Can I name a mousefolk character after cheese?
A few cheese names (Stilton, Colby, Wensley) appear here as light comic relief and work well for a tavern keeper or a comedic sidekick. For a serious hero, stick to the plant, grain and village names so the joke does not wear out over a long campaign.
