Mosque Name Generator
Masjid and Islamic center names, respectfully built
Generate mosque names built on real naming conventions: Arabic forms like Masjid An-Noor, Masjid At-Taqwa and Jami Al-Falah, mosques named for prophets and companions like Masjid Bilal, and community forms like Islamic Center of the Foothills.
About mosque names
Most mosque names follow a small set of conventions. The commonest is the word Masjid (Arabic for mosque) or Jami (a congregational mosque where the Friday prayer is held) followed by a quality the community hopes to live by: Masjid At-Taqwa (piety), Masjid Al-Huda (guidance), Masjid Al-Iman (faith), Masjid As-Salam (peace), Masjid Al-Falah (success). A second group uses one of the names of God, as in Masjid Ar-Rahman (the Most Merciful) or Masjid An-Noor (the Light). A third honors a prophet or a companion of the Prophet Muhammad, such as Masjid Ibrahim, Masjid Bilal or Masjid Abu Bakr As-Siddiq.
The Arabic article changes its sound before certain letters, and the names here write it the way it is said: An-Noor, Ar-Rahman, At-Taqwa and As-Salam, but Al-Huda, Al-Falah and Al-Iman. Arabic names use one spelling scheme, with a final -ah as in Ar-Rahmah and Al-Hikmah; Turkish and South Asian forms keep their own spellings.
English-speaking communities often choose a place-based name instead, such as Islamic Center of the Valley or Lakeshore Muslim Community Center. The place words in this list are generic or invented so that no entry points to one existing institution. Regional forms are included too: Camii in Turkish, Jamia Masjid and Masjid-e in South Asia, Surau in Malay-speaking regions, and Musalla for a smaller prayer space.
How to choose mosque names
- Choose a meaning the community wants to be known for. Taqwa, Huda, Ihsan and Rahmah say different things, and the name will be spoken every week.
- Say the name aloud with its article. An-Noor and Ar-Rahman are written here as they are pronounced; Al-Noor and Al-Rahman also appear on signs, so pick one spelling and use it everywhere.
- A registered community can pair an Arabic name with a plain English one, for example Masjid Al-Falah for the mosque and Islamic Center of the Foothills for the organization.
- Writers and world builders can match the form to the setting: Camii for a Turkish town, Jamia Masjid or Masjid-e for South Asia, Surau for a village prayer hall in a Malay-speaking region.
- For a real mosque, bring a shortlist to your imam or board, and search your city and region first so two nearby communities do not end up with the same name.
Frequently asked questions
How are mosques usually named?
Most names take one of four forms: Masjid or Jami plus a virtue (Masjid At-Taqwa), a name of God (Masjid Ar-Rahman), a prophet or companion (Masjid Yusuf, Masjid Bilal), or a place (Islamic Center of the Valley). Many communities use two at once, an Arabic name for the mosque and an English name for the organization.
What does Masjid An-Noor mean?
Masjid means mosque and An-Noor means the Light, so the name is the Mosque of Light. An-Noor is also one of the names of God in Islamic tradition and the title of a chapter of the Quran.
Why is it An-Noor and Ar-Rahman but Al-Huda?
The Arabic article is always written the same way in Arabic script, but before certain consonants, called sun letters, its l takes the sound of the letter that follows. N, r, t and s are sun letters, which gives An-Noor, Ar-Rahman, At-Taqwa and As-Salam. Before letters such as h and f the l is kept, as in Al-Huda and Al-Falah.
Can I use one of these names for a real mosque?
These names follow common conventions, so many of them are already used by mosques somewhere in the world, which is normal for mosque names. Search your own city and region so two nearby communities do not share one, and consult your board or imam before deciding. The list leaves out the names of the holiest mosques and the best-known landmarks, such as those in Makkah, Madinah and Jerusalem.
