About muslim names

A Muslim name is not the same thing as an Arabic name. The shared core is religious: the prophets of the Quran (Ibrahim, Musa, Isa, Yusuf, Maryam), the Prophet's household and companions (Fatima, Aisha, Khadija, Ali, Umar, Bilal, Sumayya), and the servant-of-God pattern in which Abd is joined to one of the ninety-nine names, giving Abdullah, Abdul Rahman and Abdul Latif. Around that core every Muslim culture adds its own layer. Iranians use pre-Islamic Persian names like Darius, Anahita and Shirin alongside Reza and Zahra; Turks shorten and respell (Mehmet, Ayse, Zeynep); South Asians favor Urdu-flavored choices such as Shahzad, Kinza and Mahnoor; Malays stack a religious name onto a second one (Nurul Huda, Luqman Hakim); Bosnians say Lejla and Emina; West Africans say Mamadou, Ousmane and Fatoumata.

Meaning matters more than in most naming traditions. A hadith recommends names that express servitude to God or praise, and parents routinely reject a beautiful-sounding name whose meaning is weak. Converts who take a new name usually pick one with a clear, positive meaning, often a prophet or companion, and many keep their birth name if its meaning is acceptable.

Every entry below is a real name in current or classical use, shown with its meaning and, where relevant, the person who made it famous.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Check the meaning before the sound. Names of prophets, companions, and the Abd- compounds are always safe; avoid anything that implies servitude to someone other than God, such as Abd al-Nabi.
  • Match the culture of your character or family: Shahbaz and Mahnoor read as Pakistani, Reza and Nazanin as Iranian, Emre and Defne as Turkish, Aminata and Ousmane as Senegalese or Malian.
  • Keep one transliteration system. Muhammad, Mohammed and Mehmet are the same name in Arabic, English and Turkish spelling; mixing them in one document looks careless.
  • For a convert's name, scholars generally say you only need to change a name with a bad or un-Islamic meaning. Yusuf, Maryam, Noor and Adam are popular because they are recognizable in both Muslim and Western contexts.
  • Double names are common: Muhammad or Nur as a first element followed by the name actually used (Muhammad Faris, Nur Aisyah, Nurul Huda). This generator lists the individual names so you can combine them.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Muslim name the same as an Arabic name?

No. All Arabic names are not Muslim (Arab Christians use Elias, Boutros and Nadine) and most Muslims are not Arab. Persian, Turkish, Urdu, Malay, Bosnian and West African Muslims all have names of their own, and many of them are included here.

What are the most popular Muslim names?

Muhammad and its forms (Mohammed, Mehmet, Mamadou) are the most common male names on earth. Ahmad, Ali, Omar, Yusuf and Ibrahim follow. For girls, Fatima, Maryam, Aisha, Khadija and Zaynab are the classics, with Noor, Layla, Zara and Hana trending among newborns.

What name should I choose if I convert to Islam?

Most scholars say a new name is only required if your current name has a forbidden or negative meaning. If you want one, prophets' names (Yusuf, Musa, Adam, Maryam) and companions' names (Bilal, Salman, Sumayya) are the usual choices, and the meaning list here helps you pick something you will be glad to explain.

What do the Abd- names mean?

Abd means servant, and it is joined to one of God's names: Abdullah is servant of God, Abdul Rahman servant of the Most Merciful, Abdul Aziz servant of the Almighty. The second half should not be used on its own as a given name, so Rahman or Aziz alone is traditionally avoided.
