Generate Middle Eastern pirate names for historical fiction, Sinbad-style fantasy and tabletop games: Barbary captains like Davud Reis, port bynames like Salim al-Bahri, women captains like Zaynab bint Harun and storybook rovers like Judar of the Seven Seas. The list holds 1,000 names, and 17 of them are real corsairs and admirals marked (historical).

About Middle Eastern pirate names

A Middle Eastern pirate name is usually a real given name with a sea title or a byname attached. On the Barbary coast and in the Ottoman fleet the title was Reis, captain, and in Turkish it follows the name: Davud Reis. Around the Gulf and the Indian Ocean a shipmaster was a nakhuda, as in Nakhuda Khalfan of Sur. Arabic adds a nisba, an adjective that ties a person to a place: al-Slawi is 'of Salé' and al-Bahri is 'of the sea'. Ibn or bin means 'son of' and bint means 'daughter of', as in Zaynab bint Harun.

Bynames do the rest. Turkish nicknames stand before the name: Kara (black), Koca (great), Kör (blind) and Topal (lame) give Kara Hasan or Koca Durmuş. Arabic ones follow it with al-, as in Sakhr al-Aswad (the black) and Labid al-Awar (the one-eyed). Europeans who joined the corsair fleets took new names, often with a tag of origin, such as Frenk Kasım or Memi the Cornishman.

The 1,000 names cover Barbary and Ottoman captains, Arab, Persian and Amazigh seafarers, women captains, crew roles, English bynames like Rashad, the Storm of Tunis, and storybook rovers in the manner of the Arabian Nights. Seventeen real corsairs and admirals are marked (historical); the rest are composed for fiction and games.

How to choose Middle Eastern pirate names

  • Pick the coast first. Reis, Kaptan and Turkish nicknames suit Algiers, Tunis, Tripoli and the Aegean; Nakhuda and bin suit Oman and the Gulf; Persian names like Nakhoda Rostam Sirafi suit Hormuz and Kish; Amazigh names like Aksil of the Rif Rovers suit the Moroccan and Kabyle shores.
  • Keep the grammar when you build your own. Reis and Kaptan follow the name, Kara or Deli go before it, al- joins the byname with a hyphen, and a woman's port byname takes the feminine ending, so al-Tunisi becomes al-Tunisiyya.
  • Swap the port. Most bynames here are built on a real harbor, so Captain Idris of Salé can become Idris of Mocha when your story moves to the Red Sea.
  • Use an English byname when the table has to say it aloud. Nasir the One-Eyed or Aksil, the Falcon of Djerba is easier for players than a long patronymic, and it tells them something about the captain.
  • Treat the entries marked (historical) as real people. They work as rivals, patrons or legends in the background; give your own hero one of the composed names.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good Middle Eastern pirate name?

Start with a real given name and add one sea element. Davud Reis and Nakhuda Khalfan of Sur use a captain's title, Salim al-Bahri and Khalid al-Slawi use a byname of place, and Nasir the One-Eyed or Kara Hasan use a nickname. For a woman captain try Zaynab bint Harun, Salma al-Bahriyya or Captain Layla of Tunis.

What do Reis, Nakhuda and al-Bahri mean?

Reis is the Turkish form of an Arabic word for a chief and was the usual title of a corsair captain; it comes after the name. A nakhuda is a shipmaster of the Gulf and the Indian Ocean. Al-Bahri means 'of the sea', and Amir al-Bahr means 'commander of the sea'.

Are these real historical pirates?

Seventeen of the 1,000 are: Hayreddin Barbarossa, Oruç Reis, Turgut Reis, Kemal Reis, Sayyida al-Hurra, Rahmah ibn Jabir and eleven other seafarers, each marked (historical) in the list. Every other entry is built from real given names with period titles, real ports, bynames or storybook places, and is not meant to be a real person.

Can I use these names for Sinbad-style fantasy?

Yes. One group is written for that: Judar of the Seven Seas, Mirdas the Roc-Rider, Marjana of the Isle of Camphor, and Arabic epithets such as Rakib al-Mawj, 'rider of the wave'. Places like Waq-Waq, Sarandib and the Sea of Zanj come from medieval Arabic travel lore, so they sit well beside the historical names.
