Ottoman Name Generator

Ottoman names follow a pattern that looks nothing like Western first-and-last naming. Until the Surname Law of 1934, most Ottoman subjects had a personal name plus a title, an epithet, or a place of origin. A man was Mehmed Pasha, Ahmed Bey, Mustafa Efendi, or Halil Ağa; a woman of the palace was Hürrem Sultan, Ayşe Hatun, or Nakşidil Kadın. The title told you rank: Pasha for a general or provincial governor, Bey for a lord or officer, Efendi for a scholar or clerk, Ağa for a janissary or household chief, Reis for a sea captain, and Çelebi for a gentleman of learning.

Distinguishing epithets carried the rest of the identity. Kara (dark), Deli (mad), Koca (great), Sofu (pious), and Gedik (breach-maker) were attached to the front, while -zade (son of) or -oğlu (son of) marked family: Köprülü Mehmed Pasha, Cığalazade Sinan Pasha, Özdemiroğlu Osman Pasha. Given names themselves came from three sources: Arabic Islamic names (Mehmed, Ahmed, Fatma, Ayşe), Persian court names (Hürrem, Mihrimah, Dilruba, Gülbahar), and older Turkic names (Orhan, Ertuğrul, Turgut, Alp).
