Generate Mesopotamian god names from Sumer, Akkad, Babylon and Assyria: Enlil, Inanna, Marduk and Ereshkigal beside lesser deities such as Nanshe and Ninkasi, and epithet forms like Shamash, Judge of Heaven and Earth. Demons and guardian spirits are labeled, and new names built on real elements are marked (original).

About Mesopotamian god names

Mesopotamian gods were written about for close to three thousand years in two languages, Sumerian and Akkadian, so many carry a name in each: Utu and Shamash for the sun, Nanna and Sin for the moon, Inanna and Ishtar, Enki and Ea. Many names are plain titles. In Sumerian nin means lady, eresh queen, en lord and lugal king, so Ninhursag is the lady of the mountain and Ereshkigal the queen of the great earth; Akkadian does the same with Bel and Belet.

The list runs from the great gods and city patrons (Nanna of Ur, Ningirsu, Zababa) through the underworld court, healers, scribes and craft gods, viziers and messengers, to the primordial beings of the Babylonian creation epic and names that epic gives Marduk, such as Tutu and Shazu. Epithet forms add a title from hymns and prayers or a plain note of role or family: Sin, Lamp of Heaven and Earth; Gula, Great Physician.

Two kinds of entry carry a label. Demons, monsters, guardian spirits and sages are not gods and say so: Lamashtu the Demoness; Lamassu, Winged Guardian Spirit. Names ending in (original), fewer than one in five, are modern compounds of real Sumerian and Akkadian words with a translation, made for fiction and not presented as ancient. Spellings are simplified, without the special letters scholars use.

How to choose Mesopotamian god names

  • Let the language set the period. Sumerian forms such as An, Enlil, Inanna and Utu suit an early city-state setting; Akkadian forms such as Anu, Ishtar, Shamash and Marduk suit Babylon and Assyria. Utu and Shamash are the same sun god, so use one of the pair unless you want both on purpose.
  • Pick an epithet form when the name has to explain itself. Nabu, Lord of the Stylus tells a reader what the god does; the bare name Nabu does not.
  • Drop the (original) tag when you use one of those names in a story or a game, and choose an entry without the tag when you need a deity from the ancient record, for example for schoolwork.
  • Use the labeled demons and guardians for threats and wards. Protection could come from a demon too: amulets of Pazuzu were worn against Lamashtu.
  • To build your own, follow the marked entries: Nin or Belet plus a noun for a goddess, En, Lugal or Bel for a god, and keep a translation beside it so the name means something in your world. Nin also opens the names of some gods, such as Ninurta and Ningirsu, so it does not always mark a goddess.

Frequently asked questions

Are these real Mesopotamian gods?

Most entries are deities known from Sumerian and Akkadian texts, from Enlil and Ishtar to minor figures such as Ninkasi, Nanshe and Kulla, along with their epithets and city forms like Shamash of Sippar. Names ending in (original) are modern constructions on real words. Confirm a name in a reference work before you cite it in a paper.

Why does the same god appear under two names?

Sumerian and Akkadian speakers shared one pantheon, so Utu is also Shamash, Nanna is Sin, Inanna is Ishtar and Enki is Ea. Gods also collected bynames. The Babylonian creation epic ends by giving Marduk fifty names, and entries such as Tutu, Shazu and Neberu come from that passage.

How can I tell a god from a demon or a spirit in the list?

The entry says so. Demons and monsters read like Pazuzu, King of the Wind Demons or Rabisu the Lurker (demon), protective beings like Shedu, Guardian Spirit, and the sages like Adapa, Sage of Eridu (not a god). Ghosts, sacred beasts, divine weapons and the foes Ninurta slew are named in the same way. An entry with no such word is a god or goddess, a deified king such as Gilgamesh, or a collective such as the Igigi.

What does (original) mean after a name?

It marks a name built for this list from Sumerian or Akkadian words in the pattern of the old names, such as Nin-ambar, Lady of the Marsh (original) or Shar-tamti, King of the Sea (original). The grammar is simplified and the translation gives the sense of the parts. These names are not presented as ancient ones.
