Mercenary commands in BattleTech are named the way old cavalry regiments were. The best-known units in the setting show the pattern: Wolf's Dragoons, the Kell Hounds and the Gray Death Legion each pair their founder's name with a unit word. This list follows that style for your own outfit, whether it is a career in HBS BattleTech, a MechWarrior 5 campaign or a tabletop force. The entries are invented for players' own units and make no claim to be part of the published setting.

The largest group is the commander's possessive: Haldane's Highlanders, Reinhardt's Panzers, Nakagawa's Lancers, Alvarez's Armored Cavalry. The surnames come from the mix of cultures the Inner Sphere is known for, so a Lyran, Combine, Capellan or Free Worlds background is easy to suggest. Numbered regiments named for a homeworld come next (3rd Verrin Lancers, Twelfth Marrowgate Rangers). The planets are made up, so swap in the world your unit hails from.

The rest are emblem and attitude names: animals (The Iron Jackals, Steel Bison Battalion), colors (Crimson Lance, Gunmetal Greys), weather and space (Stormwall Legion, Zenith Point Company), and the dry humor of people paid by contract (The Lowest Bidders, Forty Percent Salvage, Reactor Online Regiment).

How to choose BattleTech mercenary company names

  • Size the name to the force. A lance is four 'Mechs and a company is twelve, so Holloway's Heavy Lance suits a new career and a regiment name such as 7th Tessaly Dragoons suits a unit that has grown.
  • Put your own commander in the possessive. Replace the surname with your player character's and keep the unit type, and Callaghan's Cavaliers becomes yours in one edit.
  • Let the unit type hint at how you fight. Lancers, hussars and light horse read as fast units, grenadiers and cuirassiers as heavy ones, and irregulars as a command that ignores the manual.
  • Choose a name that survives a bad contract. Attitude names such as Hard Bargain or Acceptable Losses still fit after the unit loses half its 'Mechs. A boast may not.
  • Pair the name with a paint scheme. Color names like Crimson Lance or Gunmetal Greys tell you what the hangar should look like.

Frequently asked questions

How are mercenary units named in BattleTech?

Most follow one of a few patterns: a founder's name plus a unit type, as in Wolf's Dragoons, the Kell Hounds and the Gray Death Legion (named for Jaime Wolf, the Kell brothers and Grayson Death Carlyle); a number and a homeworld plus a unit type; or an emblem, a color or an attitude. Are these canon BattleTech units?

No. They are invented for players' own commands, and the commanders and planets in them are made up. The setting has hundreds of published mercenary units, so a chance match is possible. This is a fan-made list with no official status, and the three famous units named in the guide are mentioned only as the model for the style.

What is a good name for a starting mercenary company?

A starting command is usually a single lance or a short company, so modest names fit: Second-Hand Lance, Spare Parts Brigade, The Limping Lance or Company Store Survivors. Save the numbered regiment for when the roster fills out.

Can I use these names in HBS BattleTech or MechWarrior 5?

Yes. Type an entry in wherever the game asks for your company's name, and pick a shorter one if the field cuts it off. Use it the same way for a tabletop force or a campaign log, and swap in your own commander's surname or homeworld to make it fit your story.
