Generate names for medieval ships and boats: cogs, hulks, galleys, carracks, fishing cobles and river barges. The list mixes a few recorded names such as Grace Dieu and Cog Thomas with period-style inventions like Godsgrace of Fowey and Abbot's Shout of Chertsey.

About medieval ship names

Medieval ships were named above all for protection. From the late 1200s to the 1400s most recorded ship names are a saint's name, a holy name or a short blessing, and clerks told ships of the same name apart by adding the home port or the type of hull. That is why the records hold forms like Cog Thomas, Trinity Royal and Nicholas of the Tower, the last marking one of the English king's own ships.

This list holds 1,000 names in that manner. A small share are names that medieval ships bore, such as Grace Dieu, Holigost, Mora and Peter von Danzig. The rest are inventions in period style: English saints with ports (Saint Katherine of Lynn), hull types with names (Barge Maudelayne), blessings (Godsgrace of Fowey), royal and heraldic names, Hanseatic cogs with German names, Venetian, Genoese and Catalan galleys, French and Norman ships, crusader and pilgrim transports, trading ships, and the carracks and caravels of the 1400s.

Boats get their share too: fishing cobles and doggers, ferries, abbey barges and river craft such as Severn Trow and Keel of York. Pick a name by where and when your story is set, then match the port and the language to your setting.

How to choose medieval ship names

  • Match the hull to the setting: cogs and hulks carry the northern trades, galleys work the Mediterranean, and carracks and caravels belong to the 1400s.
  • Add a home port to tell two ships apart, the way medieval clerks did: Trinity of Bristol and Trinity of Newcastle can lie in one harbor without confusion.
  • Keep the language of the name in step with the flag: Sankt Jürgen for a Lübeck cog, San Marco for a Venetian galley, Sant Jordi for a Catalan one.
  • Give small craft humble names. A coble, a ferry or a river barge reads well with a pet name, an owner or a place, such as Malkin of Mousehole or Abbot's Barge of Westminster.
  • Leave out later habits: no HMS or SS in front, and no names like Victory or Dreadnought, which belong to later navies.

Frequently asked questions

Are these real medieval ship names?

A small share are. Grace Dieu, Holigost, Trinity Royal, Jesus, Christopher, Cog Thomas, Mora, White Ship, Blanche-Nef, Nicholas of the Tower, Matthew and Peter von Danzig are names that medieval ships bore. Most of the rest are inventions written in the same manner, so treat them as period-style ideas and not as a historical record.

How were medieval ships named?

From the late 1200s on, most recorded names are those of saints, holy names such as Trinity, or short blessings like Grace Dieu, which means grace of God. Ships that shared a name were told apart by home port or type, which gives forms like Cog Thomas and Nicholas of the Tower.

Does the list include medieval boat names as well as ships?

Yes. Besides cogs, galleys and carracks there are names for fishing boats, ferries and river craft, such as Coble of Whitby, Long Ferry of Gravesend, Trow of Tewkesbury and Eel Boat of Ramsey.

Which names suit a tabletop campaign or a historical novel?

Choose by region and date. A Hanseatic merchant might sail Bunte Kuh or Katharina von Riga, a crusader fleet could include Falcon of the Temple, and a voyage of the late 1400s fits a name like Caravel of Palos. None of the 1,000 names uses a later navy prefix.
