Fantasy Ship Name Generator
Sea-going ship names for every fantasy people
Fantasy ship names for novels, campaigns and worldbuilding, from elven swan ships like The Silver Cygnet to dwarven ironclads like Boilerheart, orc war galleys like Skullram and cursed vessels like The Weeping Figurehead.
About fantasy ship names
A ship's name tells you who built her before you can see the flag. That is the idea behind this list: instead of one pile of nautical names, it is written in eight voices, one for each kind of crew that sails an invented world. Elven swan ships take soft names from birds, flowers and light (The Silver Cygnet, Moonpetal). Dwarven ironclads sound like the forge (Boilerheart, The Riveted Oath), and orc war galleys are named to frighten a harbor: Skullram, Kneel or Drown.
Human ships split by purpose. Royal galleons carry a realm and a rank, so they need invented kingdoms: Pride of Caldermark, Crown of Aldenmoor, The Estwyck Sovereign. Swap in the realms of your own map. Merchant cogs are named by owners who think about money (Fat Margin, The Honest Measure), and corsair sloops by captains who think they are funny (Catch-Me-Not, Harbormaster's Headache). The last two voices belong to enchanted or cursed vessels such as The Bottled Storm, and to the ships of wizard colleges, monster hunters, pilgrims and explorers.
The names are setting-neutral on purpose. None uses a real navy's prefix such as HMS, and none leans on the gods or cities of a published setting, so they fit a homebrew world, a novel or any tabletop system.
How to choose fantasy ship names
- Pick the builder first, then the name. A dwarven crew would not sail the Moonpetal, and an elf would not name anything Keghauler, unless the ship was captured, which is a story of its own.
- Replace the invented realms with yours. Pride of Caldermark becomes the pride of wherever your campaign is set, and the pattern still reads as a royal ship.
- Use "The" the way sailors do. A name like Spite or Omen is sharper without the article, while The Weeping Figurehead needs it. Both forms are in the list.
- Give a fleet one voice. Three merchant cogs called Good Credit, Sound Investment and Letter of Credit tell the players who owns them without a word of description.
- Let a cursed ship's name hint at the curse. The Crewless, The Ship That Sails Backward and The Coin-Cursed each suggest an adventure hook.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good name for a fantasy ship?
One that tells you who sails her. The Silver Cygnet and Windharp are elven, Boilerheart and Copperbottom dwarven, Skullram and Shieldbiter orcish, and Pride of Caldermark is a royal galleon. All of these are in the list, which mixes 500 names in eight voices.
Can I use these ship names in D&D or Pathfinder?
Yes. The names are setting-neutral: no real-world prefixes, and no gods or cities from a published world. They fit any tabletop system, and our D&D ship page has a separate list of more general nautical names.
Do fantasy ships use prefixes like HMS?
HMS and USS belong to real navies, so they tend to break the mood of an invented world. A fantasy navy can show rank through the name itself, as in The Estwyck Sovereign or Lord Admiral Penrose. If you want a prefix, invent one that fits your realm's language.
How do I name a cursed or ghost ship?
Name the curse, or the thing the crew lost. The Crewless, Drowned Bell, The Tide That Took Them and The Forgotten Name all work this way. Our ghost ship name generator has more in that vein.
